Randwick jockeys review

Tom Baddock - Saturday August 19

It was a lightning fast surface at Randwick on Saturday favouring on pace runners but there were a host of good performances on the day obviously including the return of star mare Winx.

Winx had plenty of fans on track at Randwick on Saturday. Photo: ATC

Once again, Racenet was on hand to get the feedback from every rider after every race.

This is what the jockeys thought of their rides during the day.

FORMALITY

Kerrin McEvoy

Nice win. She's obviously a filly that has performed at a pretty high level and she looked ready to run well and she trialled nice. You'd expect natural improvement to bring her on a bit more. Good effort, we dashed home strong. She got within a nose of me, the second horse is no slouch.

2nd

ALIZEE

Glyn Schofield

She raced well. She seemed to get her head in front at the right time but the last 50m the winner just fought back a little bit stronger than us. It was a good effort.

3rd

CHAMPAGNE CUDDLES

Tye Angland

She went really good. The winner just had a nice time up in front and ran home good time but she attacked the line good late.

4th

ONE MORE HONEY

Blake Shinn

Good first-up run.

5th

VILLA CARLOTTA

Brenton Avdulla

I would have liked to see her do a bit more. If she's going to be at that level she's got to get over ground.

AUVRAY (FR)

Glyn Schofield

Richard told me through the week he thinks he might have turned this horse around. In the run I sat on Hughie's tail the whole way and I wasn't going to produce him, I didn't expect him to do that, but if he was going to do it, it was because I was hiding him the whole way. He actually knuckled down and gave me a lot. Richard has certainly turned him around. It might be a turning point for him.

2nd

SAYED (USA)

Hugh Bowman

He needs a bit more pressure, he over-raced most of the way. He idled in front a bit but he's a good horse in the making.

3rd

VASSAL (GB)

Brenton Avdulla

It was an improved run from the other day. He had a perfect run. He was just one-paced, the first two quickened by him. He was strong to the line. He just needs to find his right race.

4th

FOUR CARAT (GER)

Kerrin McEvoy

Just one paced home.

5th

GET ON THE GRANGE

Blake Shinn

He raced a little flat today but in saying that he still tried hard.

6th

ZERO TO TEN

Kathy O'Hara

Outclassed.

7th

MORE MOET

Tim Clark

He was disappointing considering the form he's been in.

MY TAGOSON

Hugh Bowman

It was a good win. I would have liked something to take me a bit further but I didn't want to break his stride. He's a beautiful big mover. He enjoyed the ground and probably had a class edge on them.

2nd

LAST TRY WINS

Glyn Schofield

Good effort again. Bridesmaid once more. I let him roll a little bit earlier today and tried to put him in the race and he certainly responded but found one too strong.

3rd

CHADANA

Blake Shinn

Good run, hit the line well. Think he's capable of winning one of these.

4th

GID UP STROP

Jay Ford

Ran well, just lacked the sprint of the others.

5th

MISTER MARMALADE

Kerrin McEvoy

Ran well. Just got held up at the top of the way.

6th

ARRESTAR

Tye Angland

Unlucky sums it up.

7th

AL CUBANA

Tommy Berry

Bit too much of a sit and sprint for me.

8th

VEE EIGHT

Christian Reith

Good run, just did it tough from the wide draw.

9th

FORCE OF MAGIC

Andrew Adkins (a1.5)

Sprinted at the top of the straight but was flat late.

10th

BONNIE SARE

Tim Clark

She probably needed it a bit wetter to be competitive.

11th

KINGIA

Kathy O'Hara

Had to do it a bit tough from the gate.

TIME'S UP

He drew wide and it was a lot tougher here today. He was running into it until the 250m then just whacked away. He'll improve out in the bush.

COMIN' THROUGH

Michael Walker

It was a good effort. I planned to be fourth or fifth but he's never jumped out of the gates in his life. It was the first time he's jumped so I used my initiative, I thought, 60.5kg on his back and there was no speed in the race. I think I ran almost evens the first two furlongs or something. He's run home 33.08. Even though there is a back wind he had 60.5kg and he's just turned four. He's come back good.

2nd

LIFE LESS ORDINARY

Lee Magorrian (a3)

He ran a great race. He hit the line great. Once he gets out further he'll be a good competitor in the spring.

3rd

MOGADOR

Hugh Bowman

Every chance. The winner maybe a class edge. Riding him I thought he might want a mile but watching the replay maybe he needs to go back to six.

4th

EBENOS

Tim Clark

Good run they just went a bit slow mid-race.

5th

FRANCESCO

Tommy Berry

Solid.

6th

MURAQABA

Michael Murphy (a3)

Jumped a bit awkwardly and didn't travel in the early stages. I thought he started to run home well at the end of the race.

Disappointing.

8th

DRACARYS

Andrew Adkins (a0)

Very good win. It was a big thrill for the stable and owners. To get the support off them is super and it was a big effort from them. It was also a big effort from the horse. Great win, he did it in pretty good style too.

2nd

GOLD STANDARD

Tommy Berry

He's a real workman like sort of an animal and it feels like he'll be better the further he gets.

3rd

SANCTIONED

Jay Ford

Ran super. Just raced a little bit keen in the run. He was a bit full of himself in the yard. He'll only strip fitter. He's a lovely horse.

4th

ESHTIRAAK

Brenton Avdulla

Nice colt definitely up to that grade and I think he's only going to get better and can win a nice race over longer.

5th

ACE HIGH

Kathy O'Hara

Really nice horse. I think he should have gone close to winning if I got a run when I needed it.

6th

TRAPEZE ARTIST

Tim Clark

Pleasing effort first-up with the big weight.

7th

TOGA PICTA

Michael Walker

Really nice horse. Gave me a nice feel. He's a staying horse resuming. He's a horse to look out for and I think the addition of blinkers will make him a better horse again.

8th

CUBA

Glyn Schofield

Nice type of horse. When he gets up over a trip you'll really see the best of him.

9th

WINX

Hugh Bowman

Phew. I was worried half way through. I've made it public previously that the only time I'm nervous on her is in the barriers and today everyone saw why. She can be fractious and she just jumped in the air, threw herself around as the gates opened, so there wasn't much I could do. Halfway through, the way the race was going, I thought it's going to be hard to make the ground up. I wasn't nervous because all I could do was ride her. I thought everyone else would be nervous. The win isn't up there with her George Ryder or Cox Plate wins but I suppose it was pretty impressive to the eye. It wasn't a big margin but she won pretty easily.

2nd

FOXPLAY

Kerrin McEvoy

Great run. She's shown there she's come back in great order and she's in for a great preparation. I thought I had her.

3rd

ECUADOR (NZ)

Adam Hyeronimus

He's come back well. A very good run again at weight-for-age. It just would have been good if Winx missed it by six and Foxplay by a length.

4th

RED EXCITEMENT

Joshua Parr

It was the performance of his life. He went really well first-up so he's in for a good prep.

5th

ANTONIO GIUSEPPE (NZ)

Tye Angland

Needed the run. Up to the mile will suit him.

6th

INFERENCE

Tommy Berry

He raced a bit fresh early. Pulled up and had a massive blow so he'll take great improvement. He was tough facing the breeze the whole way.

7th

HARPER'S CHOICE

Glyn Schofield

He raced on speed, he was a bit fresh. He just got outsprinted late but he certainly felt quite nice.

8th

ALLERGIC

Tim Clark

He was a stayer resuming and couldn't have asked for him to do much more.

DEPLOY

Brenton Avdulla

He's been a very genuine horse. I actually had a bit to do with him before he went to the races when I was doing a bit of work for Gerald and I always liked him. I was a little disappointed with his first preparation but obviously he wasn't mature and prep since he's got better and better.

2nd

THE VIRGINIAN

Glyn Schofield

Great run, first run for the big man so he's obviously sharpened him up a bit and it was a big run.
