$500,000 Snitzel Colt Tops MM National Yearlings Day One

Media Release - Wednesday June 5
An impeccably bred colt by Snitzel will head to the sire's former trainer after topping Day One of the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast today.

$500,000 Snitzel colt from Miss JakeoSydney based bloodstock agent and buyer David Raphael teamed up with leading Rosehill trainer Gerald Ryan to secure the colt late in the session for $500,000.

Consigned by Baramul Stud, as Lot 2188, the colt is the twelfth foal of the grand producer Miss Jakeo.

The colt is a half brother to five stakes gallopers including Ryan's Group One Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis and the How Now Stakes winner Miss Judgement, who in turn is the dam of group winner Missrock - last week's $2.3 million sale topper at the National Broodmare Sale.

"He's a lovely horse," Ryan said of the top selling colt. "He's the colt of the sale."

"I was taken down to have a look at him only half an hour before he went through and what a beautiful horse."

"He probably looked more like a Redoute's Choice. Snitzel can do that - he doesn't always throw them looking like himself."

"He's well balanced and moved well and looked to have a brain," Ryan added. "He was sound and correct in front."

Damian Yap secured the second top seller of the afternoon, the Dream Ahead-Longchamp Belle colt offered by Macquarie Stud for $150,000.

The Super VOBIS and BOBS eligible youngster is the first foal of a Flemington winning Charge Forward mare who hails from the family of Epsom Handicap winner Excellerator.

Aquis Farm Operations sold the next highest seller, the Kermadec colt from Indiscretions for $140,000 to Hong Kong trainer Tony Millard's Worldwide Racing.

A colt by Reliable Man (ex Eileen) to Singapore's Stephen Gray and a full sister to Intrigue by Showcasing (ex Forever and Ever) to Grant Morgan's Ontrack Thoroughbreds both sold for $110,000 earlier in the day.

Across the opening day of yearlings 116 lots sold at an average price of $41,457. The gross recorded was over $4.8 million and the clearance rate of 64.3 per cent.

"It was a sticky start to the day," Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. "There were a fair few pass ins which was disappointing but we gained momentum as the day went on."

"At the end of the day we were up on last year. But we are a long way from the benchmark that we like to set ourselves."

"From a buyer's perspective there's a lot of nice horses out there that have either been passed in or bought for good prices," Bowditch added.

"I think tomorrow will be a solid day's trade. I expect it to pick up a little and for buyers there will be great opportunities across all levels of the market."
