Cup Day Treble and Two Stakes Horses

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday November 5

Exciting young Newgate Farm sire Deep Field had strong results on Melbourne Cup Day with a treble of smart winners in Fields of Ivy, Defend and Jet a One as well as two new stakes horses at Flemington.

Deep Field Two year-old filly Marchena made a pleasing debut for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace in the Group III VRC Ottawa Stakes (1000m) showing good pace to be in contention all the way before boxing on well to hold third behind Aryaaf and Muntaseera.

A $200,000 Magic Millions purchase for her trainers from the Daandine Stud draft, Marchena is the first foal of stakes-placed Snitzel mare Flamenco Girl.

Also gaining a taste of Black Type was three year-old filly Xilong, who missed narrowly in a driving finish to the Listed VRC Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m).

Group III placed last season at two, the Tony and Calvin McEvoy trained filly had won her two previous starts in Adelaide and acquitted herself well in this much tougher race going down by a nose and a neck.

With three wins and two placings from five starts and prizemoney just shy of $130,000, Xilong has done a terrific job so far with the promise of much more to come.

A $360,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for McEvoy Mitchell Racing, Xilong is the best of three winners from Group III winning Testa Rossa mare Pane in the Glass.

Pane in the Glass has a yearling filly by Capitalist and has foaled this spring delivering a filly by Russian Revolution.

Deep Field is the leading Australian second crop sire by winners and stands at a fee of $44,000.
