Sharing top honours on Thursday at $400,000 were an Exceed and Excel colt from Dubai
Dream that was consigned by Victorian based Burnewang North and purchased by
Sun Bloodstock and a Fastnet Rock filly from Awesome Planet that was offered by
Newgate Farm and went to Glen Harvey Bloodstock/Paul Moroney Bloodstock.Bred in Victoria and eligible for both BOBS and Super VOBIS, the Exceed and Excel colt is a half-brother to stakes-winner Al Dhafra.
"We see that the pedigree is very good," Sun Bloodstock's Australian CEO Alvin Lui said. "We see him as a potential stallion."
The colt's new trainer Gai Waterhouse was thrilled to have been selected to prepare the youngster.
"I'm very excited," she said. "He's an extremely precocious horse, very fluid when he walks. He's very nicely put together.
"Mr Kong from China is an owner of mine and he had the horse that won the other day, Fighting Sun. He's excited about the sale and why wouldn't he be."
The Fastnet Rock filly from Group III winner Awesome Planet was bought by one of
the best judges in the business in Paul Moroney."We absolutely loved her," Moroney said. "I thought she was probably the best filly of the sale on pedigree and type.
"She's a lovely athlete who stood over ground. Whatever she looks like now, in another twelve months she's going to be a big, strong filly."
Competition on horses has been fierce at this sale with the clearance rate soaring to an unprecedented 88%.
A total of 307 yearlings have been sold so far at an average $133,575, the aggregate rising to $41 million, leaving the majority of vendors well and truly satisfied.
"It is quite incredible," Cox said. "With a clearance rate sitting at 88.5 per cent it is quite astounding.
"We have a job to do, which is to get as many good horse as we can in the sale and then sell them as best we can and hope that the vendors are happy with what they are getting and buyers are equally as happy to have purchased, whatever price that may be.
"We have a very good team in the Bloodstock Department that do a lot of work, led by Barry Bowditch. Full credit to them, it is a very even bunch of horses and the market is telling us that."
These super solid results have been achieved so far without a single yearling selling for upwards of $500,000 and given there were nine sold in this top price bracket last year, you might wonder where those horses have gone. Inglis Easter?
There are some serious blue-bloods to come, notably fillies by Fastnet Rock from Headway, Redoute's Choice from Line Honours (a daughter of Alinghi) and Encosta de Lago from Monsoon Wedding.
Any or all three could potentially smash the glass ceiling that has been in place during the first two sessions.
Stay tuned!
