Inglis Easter Yearling Sale Concludes

A reality check at the very top of the market otherwise it was three solid days of selling at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Most of the indices showed declines from last year. A lot of it can be accounted for by the fact that the $1.6 million sale topper would not have ranked in the first three last year, which was highlighted by the $5 million half-brother to Black Caviar and All Too Hard, the $4 million Fastnet Rock colt out of Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove and the $2.6 million half-brother to Starspangledbanner.


Seven yearlings made $1 million or over compared to last year's nine.

For the first time in over a decade, perennial sales top Redoute's Choice failed to have a single million dollar yearling.

One of the more pleasing aspects of the sale was the 83% clearance rate.

Predictably, Street Cry (IRE) was the big mover off the back of covering a superb book of mares in 2011. The son of Machiavellian topped the averages with 10 selling at an average of $465,500.

They were led by a colt out of Star On High that made the sales equal second highest price of $1.5 million and the most expensive filly of the sale a $1.05 million daughter of the Lonhro mare Munhro.


Both were purchased by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, the former in association with Emirates Park. The same owner put his signature to a $1.5 million brother to Snitzerland by Snitzel.

It could have been even better for Street Cry (IRE) whose colt out of Typhoon Tracy failed to find a buyer willing to part with $3 million.

The 40 yearlings sold by champion Fastnet Rock underpinned the sale.

He had the honour of siring the top priced lot of the sale, a colt out of Alingi's stakes-performed sister Perfect Persuasion. Consigned by Coolmore Stud, he was knocked down to John Warren for $1.6 million.

Shadwell Stud's Angus Gold was active throughout the sale and his 19 lots purchased for $8 million at an average over $421,000 made his the leading buyer.

The 19 were by 12 different stallions but three of his top four purchases were by Redoute's Choice at $800,000, $700,000 and $600,000.


Coolmore was the leading consigner by gross earnings with 29 lots grossing $9180,000 at an average of $316,552.

As well as the sales topper, Coolmore consigned another two lots by Fastenet Rock that cracked the $million.

The huge investment in quality mares paid off for Cressfield Stud which sold three of its five offerings at an average of $583,000.

Session Two on Thursday saw a new record set for the sale when Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum again had the final say on a Magic Albert half-sister to Golden Slipper winner Mossfun for $750,000.

That was half a million dollars more than the previous highest price lot for the Yarraman Park stalwart.
