Following three 2nd placings in provincial and city mid-week company
Gigolo broke through for a much deserved win when able to take a sit behind the
leaders. He finished strongly in the 1200m event coming away to win by almost
half a length with the 3rd placegetter a further 2.3 lengths in arrears.Gigolo was bred by Brian Agnew and Peter Hawks a partnership that enjoyed great success racing his dam Dama De Noche to win the Gr3 Breeders Stakes at Flemington and 2 Listed stakes races.
Agnew and Hawks also raced a number of the progeny of Dama De Noche notably high quality race-mare Nocturnelle (Elusive Quality) winner of the Angst and Tibbie Stakes and Seduced (Encosta De Lago) winner of 2 races and 3rd in the Gr3 Schweppes Stakes at Flemington.
Following the sale of Wakefield Stud in 2006 Brian Agnew moved his remaining mares to neighboring stud Crowningstone owned by foundation manager of Wakefield Stud Mike Thew and his wife Mia.
The steady flow of good winners and stakes horses continued with the newly re-formed partnership between Agnew and Thew producing the stakes performers Nocturnelle, Ovidio, Seduced, Senta De Noche and Harrier Jet plus the very speedy 2yo Sweet Little Lies.
Gigolo is the first winner for Valerie Agnew having taken over the racing interests of husband Brian following his premature passing after a long and gallant battle with ill health. Valerie races Gigolo in partnership with Peter Hawks and also has a number promising runners in work all bred from the best families of Agnew's former leading nursery Wakefield Stud.
With her racing team in the hands of premier trainer Chris Waller the breakthrough win for Valerie with Gigolo may prove to be the starting point in the continuation of the race-track success enjoyed by her late husband Brian.
