Reliable mare Geegees Goldengirl has filled a gap in her owners' trophy case with victory in Wednesday's Devonport Cup (1880m).
Tasmania's biggest owners Paul and Elizabeth Geard had led in the winners of nearly all of the state's biggest races but had not owned a Devonport Cup winner until Geegees Goldengirl claimed the 2016 edition of the event.
The Stuart Gandy-trained mare had chased classy galloper Admiral at her two previous weight-for-age runs before dropping back to 56kg under the handicap conditions of the $100,000 Devonport Cup.
Leading apprentice Sigrid Carr sent Geegees Goldengirl ($6.10) straight to the front from barrier five and controlled the race before the daughter of Wordsmith slipped clear rounding the home turn.
The Victorian galloper Eximius ($4.60 fav) set out after Geegees Goldengirl at the top of the straight but could only get within a half-length of the winner at the finish.
The Troy Blacker-trained Dream Roller ($7.80) was another 1-¼ lengths away third.
Geegees Goldengirl's latest win was her seventh in 23 starts while the $60,000 winner's cheque took her earnings to more than $320,000.
The Geards, Gandy and Carr combined to win the day's main support race, the Max Baker Open Quality Handicap (1150m) with the four-year-old Geegees Doublejay.
Geegess Doublejay started as a $1.90 favourite but finished three-quarters of a length ahead of the $14 chance Erin's Element while Tennessee Drive ($5.70) was third.
