Winx In A Breeze

Mark Smith - Saturday March 19
The mighty mare Winx put a seal on her greatness with a superb performance to outclass a top quality field in Saturday's $1 million Group 1 China Horse Club George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens.

It was the eighth consecutive win for the daughter of Street Cry (IRE).

The sequence began with the Group III Sunshine Coast Guineas, followed by the Group 1 Queensland Oaks, Group II Theo Marks stakes, Group 1 Epsom Handicap, Group 1 WS Cox Plate, Group II Apollo Stakes, Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes and now the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes.

Settled midfield by Hugh Bowman, Winx travelled in to a challenging spot on the home turn before coming clear to defeat Kermadec by one and a half lengths with Press Statement one and a three-quarter length back in third. (photos Lisa Grimm).

Her improvement can be measured by finishing in front of First Seal for the first time in six starts in the Ryder.

"It's pretty special, especially on a day like today on my home track, it means a lot," Waller said.

"I just watched it with the clerk of the scales of all people and it was pretty special.

"Press Statement is the next superstar when he fully develops, he's six months away, and Kermadec he's last year's prince and doing a fantastic job. I'm proud of all three."

Hugh Bowman said he felt some pressure today.

"I won my first Group 1 in Sydney in this race for Guy Walter," Bowman said.

"To come here on a mare like this today, I think it's one of the best races in the country just because of the field it attracts every year.

It's a genuine world class Group 1 event and she showed her dominance here this afternoon and it's just an honour to be a part of it.

"I was little a bit more apprehensive today just because of the draw and the setup of the race, but that's what a horse that is better than the rest can do.

"I was surprised when the other horse came with me up on the rail, but she left him in her wake over the last 100m and it was just me and her and it was ever so sweet.

"I certainly feel as though it's up to me to put her in the right spot. She's going to deliver but I still have to put her in a position where she can and so far I've been able to do that."

The 4yo mare advances her overall record to 12 wins and 3 seconds from 18 starts for earnings of $4,753,925.

Bred by John Camilleri's Fairway Thoroughbreds, Winx was a $230,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Coolmore draft for Peter Tighe's Magic Bloodstock.

The dam of Winx, Vegas Showgirl was bought for $455,000 at the 2008 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale by Colm Santry Bloodstock for Fairway Thoroughbreds.

Vegas Showgirl has a 2yo colt Snitzel colt named El Divino who created a huge impression at his career debut at Gosford on Thursday when winning by nearly five lengths

Vegas Showgirl has a yearling colt by Snitzel that will be offered in the Segenhoe draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale.

She was bred back to Snitzel last year but failed to conceive.
