It didn’t take long for Team Vic to assert their presence at the 2021 Magic Millions Yearling sale.
The second lot for day two was presented by Rosemont. The filly bred by Rosemont and sired by Redoute’s Choice out of Condesaar, who is the dam of five foals to race, all being winners with one of her progeny being the Champion 2YO filly Yankee Rose.
Within minutes, the bids had quickly climbed to $500,000 with Matt Laurie Racing and Bahen Bloodstock landing the knockout blow to secure the filly. The filly is also the full sister to Miravelle.
Naturally, the team at Rosemont were delighted with the result, posting on Twitter that ‘they were proud of the result, no matter the price’ tweeting:
The next lot to go through the ring for Team Vic was lot 188 of A-List Stud’s draft who were selling their first yearling draft at the Coast.
The filly, sired by exciting Darley Northwood sire, Frosted was knocked down for $150,000 to Chris Munce Racing. The filly includes Group 1 Flight Stakes winner Danglissa in her family.
A colt closely related to Everest winner Yes Yes Yes was bred by Glentree Thoroughbreds and sold as lot 216 through Bhima Thoroughbred’s draft.
The colt by Merchant Navy was knocked down for $400,000 to Black Soil Bloodstock, John Foote Bloodstock and Gollan Racing.
Glentree Thoroughbreds’ Luke Simpson was thrilled with the result.
“It exceeded our expectations and was fantastic,” he said.
“We kept it (price) conservative but when they make a little bit of overs, of course you walk away being very happy.
“We were hoping that there was $300,000 for him there and it was a great result when he made a good bit over that. It’s a long road to get them to the sale ring and keep them in one piece.
“To get a result like that and to go to a good home and being the first foal of a mare, it sort of sets up her career and gives her every possible chance to make it.”
Luke said the mare Dee Nine Elle had a Snitzel colt at foot and was back in foal to the stallion.
Another Victorian breeder who was all smiles was Michael Christian who got a $1 million result and another sale of $900,000.
He sold his I Am Invincible x Eloping filly for $900,000 at the Magic Millions sale in conjunction with Segenhoe.
Michael not only bred this filly but also bred her mother, who he raced before selling part of her to Segenhoe resulting in lot 257. Godolphin were the successful buyers after they went to $900,000 to secure the filly.
The newly formed Victorian Alliance, Suman Hedge Bloodstock and David Redvers quickly made a big splash when they went to $1 million for a son of Zoustar who was bred by Widden Stud in conjunction with Christian
The colt is a full brother to Boomps a Daisy who has had three wins in South Africa and also includes Bella Nipotina in his family.
Michael said it was his first $1 million result and he was still pinching himself after having two massive results.
“It was a big day and I am absolutely thrilled,” he said.
“I own the mare (Eloping) in partnership with Segenhoe and they did an amazing job preparing the filly and she looked fantastic and she has always been a bit of a star and a bit of a queen.
“You can have a really nice horse, you can have lots of interest but you still have to have people putting their hands up in the sale ring and that’s what happened.
“And I am really excited with the fact that she will be in the Godolphin blue and given every possible chance to reach her full potential.”
Michael said he bred Eloping and retained a 50 per cent interest in her and raced her before Segenhoe became involved in the mare towards the end of her racing career.
“She certainly holds a special place in our hearts,” he said.
And Michael was thrilled with the $1 million sale of the Zoustar x Fuddle Dee Duddle colt to the newly formed Victorian Alliance.
“I bred Fuddle Dee Duddle and it got sold to Perth interests and Widden bought her back after she finished racing. She was a stakes winner in Western Australia,” he said.
“They knew I had bred the horse and Antony Thompson rang me and asked if I wanted to come into partnership with them which I duly accepted.
“To have her produce a million dollar colt is something very special and as a breeder you only ever dream of being able to achieve that result and it is very, very exciting.”
Michael said in one day to have a yearling to reach $900,000 another fetch $1 million was unbelievable and exciting.
Yulong Investments also had a successful day when Mick Price went to $550,000 for lot 284, a colt bred by Mr Zhang and out of a Hussonet mare, Extremely.
Extremely is the dam of six foals to race, all who are winners and includes Extreme Choice as one of her sons.
The team in green also sold 358 to Gai Waterhouse for $440,000. The Snitzel filly is out of a Commands mare, Gregers who is a Group winner with six wins to her name, with one of those being in her two-year-old career.
Spendthrift were also not shy about securing lot 359 when they went to $550,000, for a filly out of a Good Journey mare Griante who was a seven-time winner, with three of those wins being in succession.
Griante is a ¾ sister to Good Journey and also has one foal to race, Cadenabbia, who is a winner at 1550 metres.
Spendthrift’s general manager Garry Cuddy said they had obviously targeted the filly and were delighted to secure her.
“She is a big, strong gorgeous filly with a pedigree to match,” he said.
“We are very happy to take her home and happy with what we paid for her. In a strong market we thought we bought well.”
Garry said the filly had the pedigree to slot straight into the broodmare band on the farm when her racing finished.
“But there is plenty to go on between now and then,” he said.
Garry said the sale had been phenomenal and highlighted the resilience of the industry in the first two days and expected to continue for the next three days.
At the end of day two the clearance rate was 87.80%, the median was $180,000 and the average was $258,202.
