NZB’s National Online Yearling Sale Live on Gavelhouse Plus

Media Release - Friday January 29

New Zealand Bloodstock’s first dedicated National Online Yearling Sale is now live, with the valuable 49 lot catalogue open for bidding on Gavelhouse Plus.

Bidding on the National Online Yearling Sale launched today and will run for a six-day period, with the first lot closing on Wednesday 3 February at 7PM (NZT).

Following a phenomenal Karaka 2021, buyers all around the globe will have the chance to secure progeny from proven and emerging sires, with a fresh wave of first season sire talent bracing the catalogue.

The quality line-up includes progeny by prolific Derby sire Tavistock, as well as the well-received Iffraaj, Zed, Sacred Falls, Belardo, Wrote and more.

Tavistock

The late Tavistock (NZ) has sired 18 black-type performers over the last 12 months, with Toffee Tongue (NZ) and Johnny Get Angry (NZ) both scoring at the highest level in Australia. Toffee Tongue won the Australasian Oaks (2000m), while Johnny Get Angry triumphed in last month’s Victoria Derby (2500m). Tavistock’s progeny averaged $141,000 for 30 lots sold in Book 1 at Karaka 2021.

Last season was a Haunui Farm farewell for accomplished shuttle stallion Iffraaj, who made an indelible impact over 11 seasons at stud in this part of the world.

Over his outstanding tenure at Haunui, Iffraaj has sired 26 individual stakes winners. Turn Me Loose (NZ), Gingernuts (NZ), Jon Snow (NZ) and Wyndspelle (NZ), Group One winners over distances ranging from 1400 to 2400 metres, are now all embarking on their own stallion careers in New Zealand. Yearlings by Iffraaj averaged $126,944 for 18 lots sold in Book 1.

Buyers will also get the opportunity to secure lots by freshman sires Time Test, War Decree and Russian Revolution.

Time Test

Karaka 2021’s Book 2 leading first season sire Time Test is by Dubawi, who was a multiple Group One winner and was champion of his generation in Ireland at the age of both two and three. Yearlings by Time Test averaged $86,667 for six lots sold in Book 1 at Karaka 2021

Time Test won six of his 14 starts, including four victories at Group level. He broke the track record in his victory in the Group Three Tercentenary Stakes (2000m) at Royal Ascot, and he also won the Group Two Joel Stakes (1600m), Group Two York Stakes (2100m) and Group Three Brigadier Gerard Stakes (2000m).

War Decree has been an exciting new addition to the South Island’s stallion ranks, standing at Inglewood Stud. Progeny by War Decree catalogued in Book 1 averaged $72,143 for seven lots sold.

From 11 starts, War Decree won three times including the Group Two Vintage Stakes (1400m) at Goodwood, beating the Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow. He also won the Group Three Dundalk Diamond Stakes (2300m) and placed in another two Group Two events.

All horses purchased at Karaka are eligible for the lucrative Karaka Million Series with two $1 million races available for graduates as two and three-year-olds, plus the CollinsonForex Karaka Cup for the duration of their career.
