One to Watch – Pakenham

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday September 7

The colours of Ron and Judy Wanless were carried to victory in impressive style at Pakenham on Tuesday by a Fastnet Rock colt from the family of their prized Group I winner Lights of Heaven.

Optimistically named He’s the Ultimate, the good looking three year-old colt is trained by Peter Moody, who thought highly of him enough to send him around in Listed races at his first two starts during the autumn.

Second on debut in the Listed MRC Redoute’s Choice Stakes to Najmaty, He’s the Ultimate was spelled after his unplaced next start and returned with a fifth at Sandown last month.

Dropped back to maiden class today, He’s The Ultimate was a mile too good for the opposition, opening up to win by five lengths over 1200m as favourite.

Luke Nolen blamed the soft track for his defeat at Sandown and said the colt was much happier on the firmer synthetic surface where he was able to show his true colours.

“I think he’s going to be more of an autumn three year-old rather than spring,” said Nolen.

“He’s from a good family and they get better as they get older as well.”

A homebred for Ron and Judy Wanless, He’s the Ultimate is the second winner from Spirit of Heaven, a six time Melbourne metro winning three-quarter sister by Savabeel to Group I SAJC Schweppes Oaks winner Spirit of Heaven.

Both Spirit of Heaven and Lights of Heaven were also trained by Peter Moody, who will no doubt get the best of He’s the Ultimate going forward.

Spirit of Heaven has been based at stud in New Zealand and has an unnamed two year-old filly by Tavistock, a yearling filly by Tivaci and is due to foal to Super Seth.

He’s the Ultimate is bred on an emerging nick being the eighth winner from nine runners by Fastnet Rock from daughters of Savabeel, the cross producing stakes-winner Unition and four more Black Type place-getters.
