Torrens Blasts His Rivals in $300,000 The Beauford

Tara Madgwick - Saturday November 13

A last start winner of the Listed ATC Tattersalls Cup at Randwick, progressive stayer Torrens kept up the good work at Newcastle on Saturday when scoring a resounding victory in the $300,000 The Beauford (2300m).

The Lauri Parker trained stallion has been racing in great heart this preparation and was a very fit commodity coming into this race within form jockey Jenny Duggan to ride at just 51kg.

Torrens led for home and charged to the line, powering away from his rivals to win by four lengths.

I love this horse and can’t thank Lauri and the owners for giving me the opportunity,” said an elated Duggan, whose children were on hand to witness the win.

“One thing we knew going into this was he would run the distance. He seems to race better when he finds the fence, so that was my plan.

“Lauri does a lot of treadmill work as he’s not an easy horse to train. She’s a mum with little ones as well!”

Torrens was retained to race by his breeder and has won nine races and placed three times from 27 starts earning over $500,000 in prizemoney.

Torrens is the best of three winners from winning dangerous mare A Little Knowledge, who comes from the family of Group I winner Select Prince. She died in 2019 and her last foal is an unnamed three year-old colt by Adelaide.

Torrens has been a good money earner and is the second stakes-winner for his sire Adelaide, who is best known as the sire of Group I winning mare Funstar, who sold as a broodmare prospect this year for $2.7 million.

By legendary sire Galileo, Adelaide is a value option on the Coolmore roster priced at just $5,500 this spring.
