The top bets from Clinton Payne for Wednesday

Clinton Payne - Tuesday September 26

It’s a cracking card at Rosehill on Wednesday with plenty of Saturday class form and I’m keen as mustard to get involved.

DEMERARA (Rosehill Race 1 No 2)
Exciting filly this. Easier winner on debut in November last year when beating handy performers Sheikha and Sebring Express. Spelled after that performance and returned in style when trouncing Solar Patch by 3-3/4 lengths over 1000m at Gosford on September 7. Solar Patch is a good horse to line Demerara’s form up because in his previous two starts he was beaten 1-1/2 lengths by Shogun Sun and 2-3/4 lengths by Super Ex. Both those horses have shown above average ability in recent weeks and Solar Patch only got a kilo from Sebring Sun and gave Super Ex half a kilo when he clashed with them, likewise Demerara was only in receipt of hal -a kilo under the set weights scale from Solar Patch when she towelled him up. Based on those comparisons I’m comfortable Demerara has the quality to charge through the grades and she’s drawn perfectly on Wednesday. Will jump, run and take some catching.

POLEMO (Rosehill Race 5 No 3)
She’s a high-class mare blessed with speed. As a rule I’m never keen to back horses drawn out at Rosehill from the 1100 and 1200m starts because the chute is in the middle of the track meaning a sharp and long turn into the straight so if they are caught wide they have to do plenty of extra work but this mare has the speed to offset it. She stormed through the grades last prep, going from a benchmark 63 to 83 horse, winning her first three runs by a combined margin of 11-1/2 lengths before the 1400m found her out in the Provincial Championships final. I believe she’s a genuine stakes class galloper and the 1100m is an ideal first-up target where she’ll only carry 56kg after the 3kg claim. She’s an attractive bet.

MAPMAKER (Rosehill Race 7 No 11)
I’ve been on him in his last few runs and this looks his chance. His past three runs have all been in similar grade but they’ve been Saturday class races so with an extra $60,000 in prizemoney on offer, they’re naturally stronger. He chased home the talented Special Missile in back-to-back runs before finding the 1800m slightly beyond him last time when third behind Quick Defence. He comes back to 1500m here, only rises half-a-kilo and should be able to get a sweet run from the favourable barrier 3. This is D-day for him but I’m confident he can get the job done for us.

ROSA CAROLINA (Rosehill Race 8 No 2)
Here’s another one coming back from Saturday grade that appears well placed in easier company. She’s third-up in this off the back of a luckless run first-up when posted wide, before charging late in a solid race on Wyong Gold Cup day, then last time she was only two-lengths from the inform and underrated Isorich at her last run. She was a solid winner third-up last preparation and from a good draw she maps to get an ideal run in this. Only rises 1.5kg off her last run after the claim for Rachel King and this is 3.5kg easier race on the benchmarks, combined with it being a Wednesday and not a Saturday. The bottom line is she’s well weighted and she represents great value to get the job done.
