South African G2 Winner for Deep Field

Tara Madgwick - Saturday March 5

A homebred for Shadwell, four year-old Deep Field gelding Al Muthana continued his upward spiral scoring his first Group victory at Turffontein on Saturday when capturing the Group II Wilgerbosdrift Hawaii Stakes (1400m) and has a half-sister entered for Inglis Easter.

Trained by Mike de Kock, Al Muthana settled at the tail of the field and charged home up the inside to arrive just in time and win by a neck.

He has now won six of 12 starts and was fourth in the Group II Turffontein Dingaans Stakes and Charity Mile.

His suc

cess sure to be of interest to all the people now invested in his female family following the Shadwell Dispersal earlier in the year.

A homebred for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, that was foaled and raised at Yarraman Park, Al Muthana is a half-brother to Group II winner Wawail and is the fifth winner from six to race from Group II winning Redoute’s Choice mare El Daana.

A $900,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Shadwell back in 2006, El Daana was sold at the 2021 Shadwell Dispersal at Magic Millions National where she was picked up by Paul Willetts Bloodstock for $120,000.

Her Group II winning daughter Wawail was sold at the same sale also to Paul Willetts for $425,000. She produced a colt by Al Muthana’s sire Deep Field last spring and is now in foal to Toronado (IRE).

El Daana has a yearling filly by Wawail’s sire Lonhro that made $150,000 at the Magic Millions Weanling Sale and she is entered for Inglis Easter as Lot 146 by Sledmere Stud.

El Daana produced a filly by Too Darn Hot (GB) last spring and was then covered by Impending.

Deep Field

Al Muthana is the 13th stakes-winner for Newgate Farm’s Deep Field, who covered 165 mares last spring at a fee of $88,000. He has 18 entries for Inglis Easter.
