Pedigree Watch – Royal Ascot Day 3

Tara Madgwick - Thursday June 16

More scintillating racing at Royal Ascot on Day 3 with Yulong taking a turn in the winner’s circle with a top class daughter of legendary sire Galileo, who also sired royally bred stallion Kyprios to win the Group I Ascot Gold Cup.

The Group I Ascot Gold Cup (2m4f) was won by blue-blood young stayer Kyprios, a 4YO Galileo stallion trained by Aidan O’Brien for an ownership group involving his breeders Moyglare Stud and the Coolmore partners.

Sent out favourite, Kyprios scored by a half a length over Mojo Star with the sentimental favourite Stradivarius, who had won this race three times before, finishing a gallant third at age eight.

Kyprios has won five of seven starts and is the third Group I winner and last foal from blue hen Polished Gem, who has 10 foals to race and all are winners, eight of them stakes-winners as listed below:

The Group II Ribblesdale Stakes (1m4f) for three year-old fillies was won by the Yulong owned Galileo filly Magical Lagoon.

Trained by Jessica Harrington and ridden by Shane Foley, she scored a half length win and will head next to the Group I Irish Oaks.

Magical Lagoon was bought as a yearling from Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 305,000 guineas by BBA Ireland/ Yulong and is a half-sister to Champion German 3YO and four time Group I winner Novellist.

She is the 12th winner from 12 to race from outstanding producer Night Lagoon, the Champion German 2YO Filly in 2003.

The Group II Hampton Court Stakes (1m2f)  was supposed to give The Queen a  victory with her classy colt Reach for the Moon, but it wasn’t to be with the son of Sea the Stars beaten into second place by the Jane Chapple-Hyam trained Claymore.

Claymore has two wins and a second from just four starts with this victory his first in a Black Type race and he was bought for just 10,000 pounds at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze Up Sale last year.

He is the sixth stakes-winner for Dubawi stallion New Bay, who struck at Ascot yesterday with another Jane Chapple-Hyam trained runner in Saffron Beach.

Claymore is a new stakes-winner for High Chaparral as a broodmare sire and is the best of two winners from unraced Brit Wit, a daughter of stakes-winner Brisk Breeze.
