Pedigree Watch – Glorious Goodwood Day 3

Tara Madgwick - Thursday July 28

The feature Group I Nassau Stakes (1m2f) for fillies and mares produced a second Group I victory for top class Frankel filly Nashwa, whose success highlighted a nick that clicks, while Godolphin produced an exciting 3YO stayer now favourite for the St Leger.

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, Nashwa was a good third in the Group I Epsom Oaks and then last start opened her G1 account winning the French Oaks.

Again partnered by Hollie Doyle, who has ridden the filly in every start she has had, Nashwa swept clear of her rivals to win by a length and three-quarters with long shot Aristia in second place, a daughter of Starspangledbanner.

The win coming from off the pace was in contrast to her French Oaks win when she led all the way.

"It was a change of tactics today, but I know she can win being ridden like that," said Hollie Doyle.

"They steadied the pace up today, which was a bit worrying for me from where I was, but she's got a high-cruising speed and, like I say, push button.

"The boss, Mr [John] Gosden, just told me to ride her like that – to ride her like the best horse in the race and thankfully she was and it paid off."

A homebred for Imad Al Sagar’s Blue Diamond Stud Farm, Nashwa has four wins and two placings from six starts and is the best of two winners from her stakes-winning dam Princess Loulou, who is by champion sire Pivotal.

She is one of 25 Group I winners for Frankel and is bred on a highly success nick being from a daughter of Pivotal.

The Frankel x Pivotal cross has produced seven stakes-winners from 26 runners, so 27% SW to runner and five of those SW’s are Group I winners including Cracksman and Hungry Heart.

The Group II Richmond Stakes (6f) for 2YO colts and geldings was won by race favourite Royal Scotsman trained by Paul and Oliver Cole and ridden by John Crowley.

A last start third in the Group II Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Gleneagles colt improved off that outing to race clear and win by a length and a half in track record time for a 2YO and has now won two of four starts.

A 125,000 guinea purchase for SackvilleDonald from Tattersalls October Book 2 Yearling Sale, Royal Scotsman is the best of four winners from stakes-placed Pivotal mare Enrol.

He is the 22nd stakes-winner for Galileo’s Group I winning son Gleneagles and is bred on the same cross as Nashwa, who is also by a son of Galileo from a daughter of Pivotal.

The Group III Gordon Stakes (1m4f) was won by Godophin homebred Dubawi colt New London with the high profile Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott acquisition Hoo Ya Mal in third place.

Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, New London has been working through the lower grades and was second in the Group III Chester Vase two starts back.

A big impressive individual, he overpowered his rivals here to win by a length and three-quarters and is now favourite for the Group I St Leger with four wins and a second from just five starts.

New London is the 236th stakes-winner for Dubawi and is a full brother to stakes-winner Al Dabaran being the best of three winners from Bright Beacon, a half-sister to Group I St Leger winner Masked Marvel and Group III winner Waldlerche, the dam of Arc winner Waldgeist.

For those wondering how Annabel Neasham went in the charity novelty race the Magnolia Cup, she finished a good second.
