Nanagui Breaks Through - Entered for G1 Thousand Guineas

Mark Smith - Wednesday August 3

Runner-up in three consecutive stakes to kickstart her career, the Peter Moody-trained Nanagui broke her maiden over 1118m at Geelong on Wednesday.

Caught three wide the trip under Jamie Kah, the daughter of Sebring found enough to defeat the pacesetting Miss Subtly (Rich Enuff) by a short-neck with Lambda (Snitzel) a half-head back in third.

Entered for the Group I MRC Thousand Guineas,  Nanagui debuted with a second in the Group III Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield in February before being edged out by Ruthless Dane in the Group III TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Flemington. She was sent for a spell after having little luck when defeated by Crosswinds in the Listed St Albans Stakes at Moonee Valley.

“I wanted her to be on the pace, but she did not jump well, and we were posted wide,” Kah said.

“She was feeling the pinch at the end.

“She has matured and is definitely a long stronger. She was a very small little thing when I last rode her.

“Moody will pick out some nice races for her. She has obviously got talent and will improve off that win.”

Nanagui a $450,000 Inglis Premier yearling

Nanagui was purchased by Rosemont Stud for $450,000 from the Blue Gum Farm draft at the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Slae.

That made her the equal fourth highest priced lot from the final crop of Sebring. She is the third winner from as many foals of the talented Shamardal (USA) mare Shamalia whose five wins included the Group III ATC Birthday Card Stakes and Listed Fireball Stakes.

A half-sister to Listed ATC Randwick City Stakes winner Emperor’s Way (Roman Emperor), Shamalia was bought by Beaufort Bloodstock for $300,000 at the 2019 National Broodmare Sale.

Domeland purchased an Impending colt out of Shamalia at this year’s Premier Yearling Sale.

After foaling a Lonhro colt last spring, Shamalia was given a season off.
