Changes at the Top

Mark Smith - Sunday October 30

There is quite a bit for our friends across the Tasman to crow about after the dust settled on Victoria Derby and Golden Eagle Day.

Scissor Kick’s reign at the top did not last long as Waikato Stud’s flagship stallion Savabeel wrested the top spot following the win of the Peter Moody-trained I Wish I Win in the XXXX Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill.

Savabeel

It will certainly help the balance of payments as the majority of the cash will flow back to New Zealand with I Wish I Win sporting the Waikato Stud silks.

It got better for Waikato Stud later in the day at Flemington, with perennial bridesmaid Icebath making a Group 1 breakthrough in the Tab Empire Rose Stakes (1600m).

Icebath is a daughter of the sadly missed Sacred Falls.

The win of the Chris Waller-trained Manzoice in the Group 1 Penfolds Victoria Derby (2500m) has propelled Cambridge Stud’s Almanzor (FR) to the top of the leading second-season sire rankings.

The triple Group 1 winning son of Coolmore’s Wootton Bassett (GB) takes over the top spot from Newgate Farm’s Russian Revolution.
