Deep Field Filly Latakia Makes Explosive Debut

Mark Smith - Wednesday November 23

Trial watchers were all over Latakia when the expensive Deep Field filly made her career debut over 1200m at Doomben on Wednesday.

Ridden by Angela Jones for Tony Gollan, Latakia broke a step slow before taking up the running. A reminder or two at the 200m was all it needed for the powerfully built daughter of Deep Field to spear way to a four and a half lengths win over the Better Than Ready filly Gerrymander with the 4yo Love Conquers All mare Unconventionallady a half-length back in third.

Described by Gollan as the ‘filly of the sale’, Latakia was a $520,000 purchase for Black Soil Bloodstock/John Foote Bloodstock/Gollan Racing, from the Attunga Stud draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

She is a half-sister to the lightly raced I Am Invincible filly Vinicunka, who won the Group III Maribyrnong Plate on debut for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott before finishing second to Lyre in the Group II Blue Diamond Prelude.

Latakia is the fifth winner from as many to race out of the Flying Spur mare Xandretta, a half-sister to Group 1 AJC Champagne Stakes winner Carry On Cutie (More Than Ready).

At $520,000 Latakia was the most expensive Deep Field filly at the 2021 Magic Millions

Xandretta foaled a sister to Latakia on August 30.

Deep Field has 54 catalogued for the Magic Millions, 16 at the Inglis Classic and six at Karaka.
