Pedigree Potential – Karaka 2023 – Nicks that Click

Kiwi-breds have cut a swathe through the Sydney spring racing and their presence was front and centre at Randwick on Saturday when the first three home in the $2million Group II ATC The Ingham (1600m) were all bred in New Zealand and purchased from NZB Book 1 and 2 Sales  at Karaka.

John O’Shea provided the quinella with Kirwan’s Lane (NZ) (6g Charm Spirit (IRE) prevailing over his stablemate Lion’s Roar (NZ) (5g Contributer (IRE) with the Chris Waller trained mare Atishu (NZ) (Savabeel) in third place.

The trio were bought as yearlings for a total of $495,000 and have won $4.2 million!

Kirwan’s Lane is by Windsor Park Stud’s reliable stakes producing sire Charm Spirit and is bred on a super successful nick being from a daughter of champion sire Savabeel. This nick has 100% success rate with five winners from five runners and three of those winners are stakes-winners.

Charm Spirit has two entries for K1 and six at K2, but none are bred from mares by Savabeel, who is making quite a name for himself as a broodmare sire. His daughters have so far produced 19 stakes-winners highlighted by three Australian Group I winners in Icebath, Savatoxl and Never Been Kissed. There are 48 yearlings in Books 1 and 2 bred from mares by Savabeel, currently leading the Australian General Sires List by earnings.

Runner-up Lion’s Roar won the Group I ATC Randwick Guineas as a three year-old and is the best of four stakes-winners for High Chaparral  stallion Contributer (IRE), who has nine entries for K1 and 11 for K2.

There is one entry bred on the same cross as Lion’s Roar and it’s Lot 787 in Book 2, a filly offered by Archer Park from the Black Minnaloushe (USA) mare Hang Seng, a half-sister to four-time Group I winner Wall Street.

Quality mare Atishu scored her biggest win to date during the Melbourne Spring Carnival when taking out the Group II VRC Matriarch Stakes.

She is the first stakes-winner for Savabeel from a daughter of No Excuse Needed (GB), but given there are 13 winners from 16 runners bred this way and four of them are stakes-placed it won’t be long before there are more stakes-winners bred on this nick.

There is one entry in Book 1 bred this way and it’s Lot 459 from Landsdowne Park, a Savabeel colt from good producer Red Delicious, who is already the dam of dual Group I winner Madison County and Group I placed Detonator Jack, a stylish winner at Sandown on Saturday.
