Getting in on the Ground Floor

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 3

The Magic Millions catalogue has always been seen as a great sale for the progeny of young well bred mares to make their mark and if they kick a goal early their subsequent progeny are then frequently bumped into Inglis Easter going forward, so if you want to get in on the ground floor read on.

This year’s Magic Millions catalogue features 473 yearlings  out of 1273 in total that are either first or second foals, so 37% of these yearlings are from mares that are not yet proven as producers.

Two of the current pinup success stories for Magic Millions are outstanding fillies Coolangatta and In Secret, who are both from young mares.

Written Tycoon filly Coolangatta is the first foal of Piping Hot and I Am Invincible filly In Secret is the second from Eloping.

This year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic contenders The Novelist and Croatian Belle are also first foals, while Platinum Jubilee is a second foal and Sovereign Fund a third foal.

Of course there are some very high end yearlings that fit the profile with first foals for Group I winners Sunlight, Loving Gaby, Viddora, In Her Time and Booker, but for the purposes of this story we’re going to look for something a little less obvious.

With an unproven mare, it’s nice to have a proven sire in the mix, so at least you know what half of the equation might produce.

Below are some appealing first foal youngsters that could set their dams on the path to broodmare fame and fortune:

Lot 7 Filly Zoustar x Jazette, by Fastnet Rock – Edinburgh Park

Bred on the same cross as Group I winner Zougotcha and Gimcrack Stakes winner Platinum Jubilee and is first foal from a metro winning full sister to Group II winner Cluster.

Lot 134 Colt Pierro x Miss Que, by Fastnet Rock – Coolmore

Same family as the previous, this colt is the first foal from Group III placed Miss Que, a full sister to Cluster and Jazette, the dam of the filly above.
