Where the Top Mares Headed in 2022

Mark Smith - Tuesday January 3

It’s that time again to see where some of the top-class mares headed in 2022.

On the sales front, the intrigue of guessing the future beaus of the top two sale toppers at the National Broodmare Sale, Away Game and Tofane, was dampened a touch when signed for by the Written Tycoon Syndicate.

The season saw the retirement of several Group 1 winners, such as Hungry Heart, Shout The Bar, Krone, Nettoyer, Never Been Kissed, and the import Lighthouse (USA).

On the first season sire front, Pinatubo (IRE) and Home Affairs have been afforded every chance.

As usual, we will start with the two queens, Winx and Black Caviar.

Winx and her Pierro filly (image Winx Official)

It was good news and bad news for Winx, while The Autumn Sun’s eyes would have widened when Black Caviar made an entrance in the serving barn.

The Stud Book records are not yet complete and subject to change.

Grab a coffee; here we go.

Winx (Street Cry (IRE) x Vegas Showgirl byAl Akbar) 25-time Group 1 winner.

The champion daughter of Street Cry (IRE) had her long-awaited first foal, a healthy daughter of Pierro.

Covered by Snitzel on November 3, Winx failed to conceive. It was decided not to have her served later in the season.

Winx’s dam Vegas Showgirl missed to Extreme Choice in 2021 and was covered by Snitzel on November 4.

Black Caviar (Bel Esprit x Helsinge by Bel Esprit) Group 1 VRC Patinack Farm Classic (twice), ATC TJ Smith Stakes (twice), BRC BTC Cup, MVRC William Reid Stakes (twice), VRC Lightning Stakes (three times), VRC Newmarket Handicap, MRC CF Orr Stakes, SAJC Goodwood Handicap, SAJC Robert Sangster Stakes, Ascot Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Undefeated champion Black Caviar missed to both Extreme Choice and I Am Invincible in 2021 and was covered by The Autumn Sun on September 9. Three daughters of Black Caviar are at stud.

Away Game (Snitzel x Elusive Wonder by Elusive Quality) Magic Millions 2yo Classic Group II ATC Percy Sykes Stakes.

The $3,700,000 earner Away Game was a $4 million purchase by the Written Tycoon Syndicate at the National Broodmare Sale. So, no surprise that her first visit was to Yulong’s champion stallion on September 16.

Avantage (Fastnet Rock x Asavant by Zabeel) 9-time Group 1 winner.

Coolmore shelled out NZ$4.1 million for Avantage when she was offered on Gavelhouse, setting a new mark for a horse sold online. The 9-time Group 1 winner foaled a Wootton Bassett (GB) filly on September 5 and was covered by I Am Invincible just over three weeks later.

Alizee (Sepoy x Essaouira by Exceed And Excel) Group 1 ATC Flight Stakes, Group 1 Queen of the Turf Stakes, Group 1 MRC Futurity Stakes,

Bonaria (Redoute’s Choice x Decidity by Last Tycoon) Group 1 VRC Myer Classic.

Robert Anderson’s royally-related Bonaria seems to have taken a dislike to I Am Invincible. After missing to him last year, she again failed to conceive this spring before a change of tack saw her covered by Zoustar on October 4.

Booker (Written Tycoon x Noondie by Flying Spur) Group 1 MRC Oakleigh Plate.

A $1,600,000 Inglis Chairman’s Sale purchase, the speed machine Booker foaled an I Am Invincible filly on September 27 and was covered by Home Affairs.

Reg Kemister’s Group 1 winner hasn’t strayed away from I Am Invincible in five seasons. She has three consecutive fillies and was covered on October 1.

Hungry Heart (Frankel x Harlech by Pivotal) Group 1 ATC Australian Oaks, Group 1 ATC Vinery Stud Stakes.

Yulong’s beautifully related Frankel mare has a nice early cover (Sept 1) to resident champion Written Tycoon.

In Her Time (Time Thief x Hell It’s Hot by Zeditave) Group 1 ATC The Galaxy, VRC Lightning Stakes.

A $2,000,000 Ingis Chairman’s Sale purchase in 2020, In Her Time made $200,000 more when going through the same ring a year later. She had a Written Tycoon colt on August 14 and was covered by Written Tycoon again.

Krone (Eurozenex x Soft Landing by Al Maher) Group 1 ATC Coolmore Classic

The overachieving Krone rarely achieved the accolades she deserved, but the 5-time stakes-winner earned a date with royalty in her first season when courted by I Am Invincible.

Oohood (I Am Invincible x Bella Sunday by Sunday Silence) Group 1 ATC Flight Stakes

The 6-time stakes-winner is as reliable at stud as she was on the racetrack with six consecutive foals, none born after September 9.

That will change next season as Politeness was covered by Castelvecchio on November 9 after foaling a Written Tycoon colt in September.

Rising Romance (Ekraar (USA) x Post Romance by Postponed) Group 1 ATC Australian Oaks.

The dual Group 1 winner could not have made a better start to her broodmare career with her first live foal, Exhilarates (Snitzel), winning five stakes races and over $2.4 million, including the Magic Millions 2yo Classic.

Which makes it more heartbreaking that Samaready has just two live foals from her first seven seasons. After missing in 2021, she was exported to Ireland.
