Harry Angel's Tom Kitten Opens Winning Account

Godolphin’s Tom Kitten gave first-season sire Harry Angel (IRE) his third winner and franked the Melbourne form when breaking his maiden in the Yes Yes Yes 1st Yearlings Maiden (1300m) at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Ridden by Nash Rawiller for James Cummings, Tom Kitten came from well back in the field, making his run down the centre of the track with the talented Extreme Choice colt Make a Call.

Despite running out in the closing stages, Tom Kitten had enough in hand to defeat Make A Call by a long-neck

It was two and three-quarter lengths back to The Autumn Sun colt Autunno, who was doing his best work at the finish.

Tom Kitten carried the stable confidence on debut when fourth behind Veecee (Capitalist) and Saturday’s Inglis Millennium contestant Hellish (Hellbent) over 1100m at Flemington on January 14.

Assistant trainer Darren Beadman said the son of Harry Angel (IRE) had excuses for that run.

“He was very well fancied in Melbourne, but it was a very hot day and he got flustered and worked up going to the gates,” Beadman said.

“That probably told on throughout the run. He had trialled very well before that. He came back here in good order and settled in lovely at Osborne Park.

“He is a very kind horse and the Harry Angels are making a nice impression. He looks to have a bright future.

“When he trialled at Werribee he jumped and gradually built the revs up. I said to Nash to ride him as he jumps, give the horse confidence, and make the last 300m the best.”   

A half-brother to the Listed Canberra Guineas winner Promotions, Tom Kitten is the fourth winner from as many to race from the capable Street Cry (IRE) mare Transfers.

A descendent of the hugely influential import Dancing Show (USA), Transfers has a yearling colt by Brazen Beau and was covered by Kingman’s 5-time Group 1 winning son Palace Pier (GB) last spring.

Tom Kitten is the third winner from nine runners for Darley Stud’s current first-season sire front-runner Harry Angel (IRE).

The son of Dark Angel has a couple of black-type chances on Saturday. His Inglis Banner (LR) winner Arkansaw Kid resumes in the $2,000,000 Inglis Millennium at Randwick and Fire Follower takes his place in the Group III Blue Diamond Prelude (c&g) at Sandown.
