Two-Year-Old Pierro Filly Tu Qui Santuzza Makes Winning Debut at Canterbury

Mark Smith - Friday February 24

Two days after the 3yo Pierro gelding Cool Jakey made a winning debut over 1200m at Warwick Farm, Pierro struck again with his first 2yo winner of the season, the debutant Tu Qui Santuzza at Canterbury on Friday.

Ridden by Regan Bayliss for the unstoppable Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bottt stable, Tu Qui Santuzza made full use of her inside barrier draw to push through and lead.

Tu Qui Santuzza kept up a solid gallop to defeat the Speith colt Chevron by one and a quarter lengths, with the National Defense (GB) filly Bianco Nero a length back in third.

“She was very impressive. She had to do a bit of work to get there, and they never left her alone,” stable representative Neil Paine said.

“Gai and Adrian told the owners she would be too good for this field. She has nice ability but felt the 1100m might be a bit sharp.

“She showed a lot of fight. It is good for the stable, which is going well. We have had six winners from six runners Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, forgetting about Canberra today, where we just got beaten in the big race.

“Let’s hope it continues tomorrow because we have a big day.”

A $400,000 purchase for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott/Kestrel Thoroughbreds from the Coolmore draft at the Magic Millions, Tu Qui Santuzza was Pierro's equal most expensive filly of the sale.

It pays to follow Breednet at the trials

She is the second foal and first winner for the stakes-placed Savabeel mare Santuzza who was a $575,000 purchase for Go Bloodstock Australia/Paul Moroney Bloodstock from the Dormello Stud draft at the 2018 National Broodmare Sale.

A half-sister to stakes-winner Tukiyo (Haradasun) from the family of Rock Of Gibraltar, Santuzza had a sister to Tu Qui Santuzza make $325,000 to the bid of Belmont Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) at the Magic Millions in January.

She has been named Cavalleria and will carry the colours of Bob and Sandra Peters.

After foaling a Wootton Bassett (GB) colt last spring, Santuzza was covered by Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside.
