After more than three decades of showcasing the world-class bloodstock bred, raised and sold by Sir Patrick Hogan, New Zealand Bloodstock has the honour of offering one final consignment in this month’s Sir Patrick Hogan Unreserved Dispersal Sale on Gavelhouse Plus.
Sir Patrick, who passed away in January of this year at the age of 83, is arguably the most influential figure in the history of New Zealand’s thoroughbred breeding industry. He was inducted into both the New Zealand and Australian Racing Hall of Fame, and the legacy of his world-famous Cambridge Stud – which he established in the 1970s – will be felt for decades to come.
NZB Principal Sir Peter Vela recollected on Sir Patrick Hogan’s influence over the years.
“In my lifetime there has been no greater influence on the New Zealand breeding industry than Sir Patrick.”
“He made the Karaka Sales Centre his own, and we were honoured to record his legacy by naming it the Sir Patrick Hogan Auditorium at the 2023 National Yearling Sales Series.
“Personally, he provided me with incredible guidance and assistance and I was proud to call him a friend.
“A legendary stud master, breeder, racehorse owner, mentor to many and a truly devoted family man,” commented Vela.
Together with his wife Justine, Sir Patrick Hogan bred 40 individual Group One winners and earned five New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeder of the Year Awards.
A prized member of their star-studded broodmare band was the iconic Eight Carat (Pieces Of Eight), one of only two broodmares in history to produce five individual Group One winners – Octagonal (NZ) (Zabeel), Marquise (NZ) (Gold And Ivory), Diamond Lover (Sticks And Stones), Mouawad (NZ) (Zabeel) and Kaapstad (Sir Tristram). Countless other big-race stars descend from her daughters and granddaughters.
Another key feature of Sir Patrick’s career is Cambridge Stud’s breed-shaping stallion roster. Foundation stallion Sir Tristram is one of the all-time greats, siring a total of 45 individual Group One winners – from the Golden Slipper (1200m) to three Melbourne Cups (3200m) and almost everything in between.
His equally prolific son Zabeel (NZ) joined him at Cambridge Stud and followed his example with 46 Group One winners of his own, while Zabeel’s Cox Plate-winning son Savabeel has added another generation to the dynasty with his own amazing career at Waikato Stud.
Sir Patrick also teamed up with New Zealand Bloodstock to share many magic moments in the Karaka sale ring – a partnership and legacy that was honoured just before the start of Book 1 of Karaka 2023 in January, when the complex was named the Sir Patrick Hogan Auditorium in his honour.
With Sir Patrick at the helm, Cambridge Stud was leading vendor at New Zealand’s National Yearling Sales for 32 years in a row between 1981 and 2012.
He had a hand in multiple slices of New Zealand thoroughbred auction history, including leading our first million-dollar yearling through the ring at Karaka in 1989 – a colt by Sir Tristram out of Surround (NZ) (Sovereign Edition), who was ultimately knocked down for $1.2m.
At Karaka 2000, Sir Patrick Hogan’s Cambridge Stud set a New Zealand record that still stands to this day. Their colt by Zabeel out of Diamond Lover was sold for an extraordinary $3.6m. Named Don Eduardo (NZ), he went on to win the Group One Australian Derby (2400m).
Overall, Sir Patrick Hogan sold 11 yearlings at Karaka for $1m or more. Throughout Cambridge Stud’s 40 National Yearling Sales under Sir Patrick’s ownership, they came away with no fewer than 24 sale-toppers.
The 31-lot catalogue for the Sir Patrick Hogan Unreserved Dispersal Sale is live and available to view on Gavelhouse Plus. The stock on offer represents carefully curated matings that span multiple generations of Sir Patrick’s legacy, with opportunities aplenty for both pinhookers and end users looking to strengthen their broodmare bands.
They have been meticulously raised and cared for by the Monarch Farm team with parades of weanlings and broodmares underway at the Cambridge-based property, while the racing propositions are located just up the road at Kiltannon Stables for inspection.
Bidding will open at 10am (NZT) on Wednesday 26 April and the final countdown will commence at 7pm (NZT) on Friday 28 April.
