Sun is Shining

Tara Madgwick - Monday June 19

Much missed Golden Slipper winning sire Sebring has several young sons making an impression at stud and one of the quiet achievers is Sebring Sun, whose 58.8% winner to runner strike rate is making owner breeders sit up and take note with smart filly Acappella Sun saluting at Rosehill last Saturday and Lika Sun an impressive winner on Monday.

Trained by Matthew Dale, Acappella Sun has been placed in Highway races at her previous two starts and broke through for a well deserved half length win.

Retained to race by her breeders, Acappella Sun has been a model of consistency with three wins and six placings from 16 starts and prizemoney in excess of $166,000. She is the first foal of well bred winning Encosta de Lago mare In Unison, who comes from the family of Group I winners A Touch of Ruby, Loire and Vouvray.

The second foal of In Unison is another Sebring Sun filly called Acappella Moon, who has also shown plenty of ability in the Clayton Douglas stable winning at Morphettville and finishing fourth in the Listed SAJC Without Fear Stakes. She has a yearling colt to follow by Sebring Sun and is back in foal to him again.

At Newcastle on Monday, the Steve Hodge trained three year-old Sebring Sun filly Lika Sun produced an outstanding finish to power home and win the 1150m maiden by a length and a half running away at just her third start.

Second at her previous start, the filly is clearly making swift progress with better wins to come.

Sebring Sun stands this spring at a fee of $6,600,

A stakes-winning sprinter that won the Listed ATC Rosebud and was third in the Group I ATC Golden Rose to Exosphere, Sebring Sun retired to Glenthorne Park Thoroughbreds on the North Coast of NSW near Taree.

He covered two small books of 28 and 45 mares in his first two seasons at a fee of $3,300 and those first two crops of foals are doing a great job of putting Sebring Sun on the map.

Sebring Sun has 19 three year-olds, nine of which have raced and seven have won with Acappella Sun the best of them along with Tasmanian trained Miami Sun, multiple winner Bring the Rabble and Sammiballerina, who won the $125,000 Capricornia Classic at Rockhampton.

His second crop featuring 32 two year-olds has already seen eight of them race and three have won with Acappella Moon the best followed by Sunnycoast, who has won three of four starts and also captured the $125,000 Capricornia Classic at Rockhampton.

Whatever way you look at it, 10 winners from 17 runners off a $3,300 fee is a job well done and as a result Sebring Sun has had a fee increase this spring and rises to a well-deserved $6,600. With excellent fertility and burgeoning results, Sebring Sun has earned the respect of his supporters and is sure to attract new interest this spring.
