Astern Filly Parisal Toughs it Out in Toy Show Stakes

Mark Smith - Saturday August 19

With 3yo siblings also with stakes assignments on Saturday, Parisal (Astern) and Queen of The Ball (I Am Invincible) fought out a dramatic finish to Saturday’s Group III Toy Show Stakes at Randwick.

Parisal’s half-brother Cylinder (Exceed And Excel) returns in the Group III Vain Stakes at Caulfield, and Queen of The Ball’s half-sister Platinum Jubilee (Zoustar) is a popular choice in the Group II Silver Shadow Stakes at Randwick.

Ridden by Jean Van Overmeire for James Cummings, the Godolphin colourbearer Parisal fought tenaciously to defeat Queen Of The Ball by a half-neck with the 7yo Hinchinbrook mare Lady Brook one and a quarter lengths back in third.

Parisal earned her first stakes win in the Group III PKF Typhoon Tracy Stakes at Moonee Valley on March 18, the day her half-brother Cylinder was runner-up in the Group 1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill.

The lightly raced daughter of Astern advances her record to four wins and two seconds from seven starts with earnings of $445,875.

Cummings said Parisal made giant strides last preparation.

“She’s all about the improvement coming into this race, considering how far she came last preparation,” Cummings said.

By dominating a maiden, going straight to Saturday and winning again and then straight to a Group III in Melbourne and winning.

“This is all coming to fruition for Parisal, she’s been one of the best triallers we’ve had coming into the early stages of the upcoming carnival for our squad.

“Jean has ridden our horses extremely well. We gave him one stakes ride last year, and he delivered one stakes win, so now he’s doubled the quota and good on him.

“It’s excellent again for Astern, who is kicking off this season a little bit like how he left off last.”

“She won with 53kg today and won narrowly. but you have to admire the depth of the win under that sort of set-up.

“I think if we keep aiming off the low-hanging fruit with Parisal for the rest of the campaign, we’ll get rewarded in the long term, and she is going to be quite well placed in mares races.”

Parisal is the second stakes-winner from the first three foals of the Street Cry (IRE) mare Circular.

From the family of Lonhro, Circular won five and placed in eight of her 20 starts, highlighted by her victory in the Group III Matron Stakes at Flemington.

After foaling a Bivouac filly last spring, Circular visited Brazen Beau.
