Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Friday November 3

Two heats for juveniles at Randwick on Friday morning and both were won by Capitalist colts, although a Godolphin homebred Exceed and Excel colt that ran second has found himself being put straight into my Black Book!

These were only short heats over 737m and the first was won by Market Magic, a Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt in the colours of Jonathan Munz’s Pinecliff Racing. He had the benefit of barrier one and jumped quickly to hold the fence, travelling behind the leader and then when switched around him let down to win by a couple of lengths.

Market Magic was the most expensive yearling by Capitalist at Inglis Premier.

Market Magic was a $460,000 Inglis Premier purchase from Yulong for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott / Kestrel Thoroughbreds and runs for a syndicate that includes Yulong and Jonathan Munz, who knows this family inside and out. Market Magic is the third foal from unraced Rekindled Choice, a full sister to Group I winner and promising young sire Alabama Express that was bred by Jonathan Munz, as was her mother Lago Ovation, a half-sister to the Munz bred Everest winning superstar Giga Kick.

The second heat was won by the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Capitalist colt Spartus, who was also favoured by gate one to lead all the way and win, but the run of baldy faced chestnut colt Gram in the Godolphin blue was well worth a look. He settled last and surged to the line under a hold for second and I’ll be looking forward to seeing him in something a bit longer where we can see what he can really do.

Spartus was bought for $135,000 at the 2022 Inglis July (Early) Online Sale (see his sale page here) and is the first foal of Zouriana, a placed Zoustar mare from a half-sister to stakes-winner Cornell.

Runner-up Gram is a full brother to Group III winning juvenile Zulfiqar, but unlike his brother, who is a relatively plain bay, Gram has picked up the flashy chestnut colouring of Golden Slipper winning sire Rory’s Jester, who appears back in his pedigree. His dam Sayf Shamal (USA) is a Northern Hemisphere bred daughter of slick Group II winning juvenile Alizes (also chestnut with baldy face), the grand-dam of Godolphin superstars Alizee and Astern.
