Zoustar Colt Wins $2million G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes

Tara Madgwick - Saturday November 4

Widden Stud’s champion sire Zoustar produced the trifecta in the Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes in 2018 won by his champion daughter Sunlight and he got the winner again at Flemington on Saturday when his progressive colt Ozzmosis scored a scintillating win in the Darby Racing colours.

Trained by Bjorn Baker and ridden by Rachel King, Ozzmosis has shown glimpses of G1 potential in his brief career to date and all that talent came to fruition when he powered up the straight to win by a length and a half over I Am Invincible colt I Am Unstoppable with Golden Slipper winner Shinzo a good third.

Ozzmosis won his first three starts including the Listed ATC Heritage Stakes before finishing third to King’s Gambit in the Group II ATC Roman Consul Stakes last month and tuned up with a recent Flemington jump out that really put the writing on the wall for an impending peak performance.

“I didn't think he was quite right(in the Roman Consul). He didn't parade great and he didn't look fantastic,” Bjorn Baker revealed.

"He went down to Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young's stable at Cranbourne and he's just thrived.

"His jump out last week was sensational. I don't know why he started the price he did. It is a massive day and we've got a Zoustar colt going to stud.”

Ozzmosis was a $250,000 Magic Millions purchase for Darby Racing.

A $250,000 Magic Millions purchase for Darby Racing from the Sledmere Stud draft, Ozzmosis attracted the interest of Newgate Farm/ China Horse Club and partners following his first couple of wins and they now share in his ownership with this Group I victory assuring his place as a highly desirable stallion of the future.

“This is unreal. I was here 12 years ago as co-trainer of Lion Tamer with my father and that is one reason I came to Australia. It is the lucky country and the greatest racing in the world,” Baker said.

"This horse has been outstanding from the first gallop he had.

"Darby Racing have been great supporters, they keep finding good ones. Massive result, this horse is a superstar.

"We've got a couple of the smartest people in racing in him and it starts with Scott Darby, he's a superstar.

"Rachel King… the harder you work, the luckier you get and she is a superstar, she's done so much work, Paul Whitmore who rides this bloke every day, it's a big team behind me and in this horse."

Ozzmosis has four wins and a third from five starts with prizemoney topping $1.4million and Rachel King has ridden him in all three starts this spring.

“I couldn't believe how well he just travelled, I had to take a second look when I was at the 300 and I was still travelling,” said King.

“Today's the first day I've ridden him where I haven't had to put pressure on him early because up the straight just made it easier for him, we've been drawing wide and doing a lot of work, but when I jumped him out down the straight the other day, I've never ridden a horse who's been so professional.

"He got a bit lonely, got a bit lost on his own up the straight the first time and I think if anything it got to him. He's got another couple of lengths up his sleeve. He's a freak.”

A star in the making - Ozzmosis as a foal in 2020

Bred by China Horse Club, Ozzmosis is the second winner from No More Tears (NZ), a Group III-winning Darci Brahma mare from the family of Group II winners Hips Don’t Lie, Splintex and last season’s star juvenile Learning to Fly.

No More Tears was a $550,000 purchase for China Horse Club from the Attunga Stud draft at the 2018 National Broodmare Sale and looks to have been a good investment as she has a yearling colt to follow by Wootton Bassett (GB) and is due to foal again to Zoustar.

Her two year-old colt by Zoustar was passed in at Magic Millions this year and retained by China Horse Club with the name Olufsen.

Ozzmosis is the sixth Group I winner for Widden Stud’s champion sire Zoustar.
