Throughout the three months since the catalogue went to print for the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale, a series of significant racetrack results have provided even more reasons for buyers to head to Karaka to attend the world’s leading sale of two-year-olds.
No fewer than eight recent Group or Grade One winners from various corners of the world will have relatives going through the Karaka sale ring this week.
Remarkably, Lot 209 comes from the same family as the winners of two of Australia’s most coveted stallion-making three-year-old races – Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) hero Griff (Trapeze Artist) and Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) winner Ozzmosis (Zoustar).
Both Griff and Ozzmosis descend from Lot 209’s second dam Getting There (Jungle Boy), who herself was a stakes winner and the dam of 11 winners including three at stakes level. Her massive influence sees more than 30 individual stakes performers tracing back to her, including the likes of Hips Don’t Lie (NZ) (Stravinsky), Learning To Fly (Justify), Acrobat (Fastnet Rock), Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock) and Splintex (Snitzel).
Lot 77 already had an eye-catching pedigree, being a half-brother to proven Group One performer Desert Lightning (NZ) (Pride Of Dubai), who recently kicked off his four-year-old season with a stylish win. But this Per Incanto colt also comes from the same family as Godolphin’s star Sydney three-year-old Tom Kitten (Harry Angel), who won the Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) by almost four lengths at Randwick on October 28. He also won the Group Three Up and Coming Stakes (1300m) earlier in the spring, then placed in the Group Three Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) and Listed Dulcify Stakes (1600m).
The pedigree page of Lot 181 features the top-class Idiomatic (Curlin), an outstanding recent winner of the Grade One Personal Ensign Stakes (1800m), Spinster Stakes (1800m) and the prestigious Breeders’ Cup Distaff (1800m).
The third dam of Lot 196 is the granddam of Tropical Squall (Prized Icon), who has risen to prominence in Australia this spring with a brilliant win in the Group One Flight Stakes (1600m), along with placings in the Group Two Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and Group Three Ethereal Stakes (2000m).
Last month’s Group One Toorak Handicap (1600m) winner Attrition (Churchill) comes from the same family as Lot 336. Both Attrition and Lot 336 have the multiple stakes winner and Group One Golden Slipper (1200m) placegetter Loving Cup (Bluebird) as their third dam.
Lot 338, a blue-blooded colt by Ocean Park (NZ) out of the Group One-winning mare A Touch Of Ruby (NZ) (Pins), comes from the same family as one of the star performers of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington – the spectacular all-the-way winner of the Group One Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) and Champions Mile (1600m), Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai).

- Lot 298 is a half-sister to Kovalica (NZ) (Ocean Park), whose career-best win in the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) earlier in the year already features in the catalogue. That super-talented galloper has since made his mark during the Sydney spring, finishing a close second in the time-honoured Group One Epsom Handicap (1600m).
- Lot 116 is a half-brother to Hong Kong sprint sensation Lucky Sweynesse (NZ) (Sweynesse), who was a triple Group One winner last season. He has since picked up where he left off, adding Sunday’s Group Two Jockey Club Sprint (1200m) to his outstanding record.
- Lot 142 is a full-brother to Saturday’s Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1600m) third placegetter Strait Acer (Headwater) who has earned A$1,055,775 in stakes earnings, after recently placing second in the Silver Eagle and third place in the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
- Lot 50 is a full-brother to Talisker (NZ) (Embellish), who was a gallant runner-up behind the undefeated Crocetti (NZ) (Zacinto) in the Group One New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m).
- Exciting two-year-old Espionage (Zoustar), who won the Group Three Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Randwick in his only appearance to date, is a close relative of Lot 361.
- Lot 230 is a half-brother to the Group Two Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) runner-up Mary Shan (NZ) (Almanzor).
- Lot 88 is closely related to the emerging New Zealand star Adam I Am (NZ) (Almanzor), who has had two starts this spring for two spectacular wins by a combined margin of seven and a half lengths.
- Lot 109 comes from the same family as the exceptional Group One winner I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel), who has placed in this spring’s Group One Memsie Stakes (1400m) and the A$20m The Everest (1200m).
- Lot 114 is closely related to Sunshine In Paris (Invader), who was a Group One winner last season and has added this spring’s Group Two Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill to her record.
