Third Flemington Stakes-Winner for Pierro

Tara Madgwick - Saturday November 11
The 2017 Melbourne Cup Carnival will be remembered as the point in time when Coolmore's Golden Slipper winning young gun Pierro came of age as a sire.

Last Saturday he sired Levendi to win the Group III VRC Carbine Club Stakes (1600m), then on Thursday his sensational daughter Pinot won the Group I VRC Oaks (2500m) and today his exciting son Kentucky Breeze remained unbeaten to win the Listed VRC Emirates Airline Handicap over 1400 metres.

A narrow winner at Stawell on debut last month, the Levi Kavanagh trained three year-old was easy in the market starting at $21.

He belied that lack of interest from punters, finding the line strongly to win by a long head and has now two from two earning $103,600 for his big group of owners.

Kentucky Breeze as a yearlingThe gelding as purchased by his trainer for $105,000 from the Newgate Farm draft at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

"I bought him myself and didn't have any owners in mind so I took a punt on him," Kavanagh said.

"He was a mad colt at the time and took him back to our farm, ended up gelding him and he relaxed really nicely.

"The guys have been patient and now he's won two from two and he's a stakes winner so it's all working out well."

Kavanagh said he feels Kentucky Breeze will be a better horse in the autumn.

"I think he'll be better next prep and probably step out over a mile with him," Kavanagh said.

"I don't know what I'll do with him now, he might have another run and then have a spell."

Bred by Blake Sandblom and Henry Field, Kentucky Breeze was foaled and raised at Newgate Farm and is a half-brother to Group III winner Maraschino and stakes-placed Tahni Dancer and Dee Bee Nine.

PierroHe is one of five winners and the last foal from Group III winning Redoute's Choice mare Tahni Girl (she died in 2015), a daughter of triple Group I winner Ballroom Babe.

Kentucky Breeze is the fifth stakes-winner for Pierro and all of those stakes-winners feature Danehill in their female pedigree, so for those breeders looking for that outcross sire that works, Pierro is fast emerging as THE horse.

Footnote : The only other sire to produce three stakes-winners at this year's Flemington Cup Carnival is High Chaparral, so Pierro is in elite company!
