One to Watch – Canterbury

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday May 29

Trial watchers have had a good eye on this two year-old Toronado (IRE) filly for a while now and punters jumped out of trees to back her at Canterbury on Wednesday and she didn’t let them down.

Trained by Michael Freedman, Tehina showed nice ability in two trials last month and then made her debut on the heavy 10 track at Warwick Farm three weeks ago when finishing sixth to Clean Energy, who won a stakes race in Brisbane last weekend.

With a better surface this time and barrier one, Tehina was given a perfect ride by Jason Collett trailing the leader Madrina and then powering past to win the 1100m maiden by more than two lengths running away.

“She’s shown us plenty of promise from day one and runs for a really good group of owners,” said stable representative Stephen McLean.

Jason Collett was full for praise for Tehina, who was a $230,000 Magic Millions purchase from the B2B Thoroughbreds draft for some good judges in Demi O'Byrne/James Bester.

“She’s very sharp, but she found one sharper which worked out well as she had a bunny to chase,” Collett said.

“I was in no rush, as I was always confident and she went past nicely and toughed it out to win well.”

Tehina was a $230,000 Magic Millions purchase from B2B Thoroughbreds.

Tehina was bred by B2B Thoroughbreds and they retain an interest in this good looking filly, who is the second foal and first winner for Group III winning Turffontein mare Lyuba.

B2B Thoroughbreds sold a Shalaa (IRE) colt from Lyuba at Inglis Classic this year for $140,000 to Rathosheen and she had a filly by the same sire last spring before visiting In the Congo.
