Just Reward for Faraway Town

Mark Smith - Sunday February 18

So often the bridesmaid, Faraway Town had her moment in the sun at Randwick on Saturday when everything broke her way in the Group III Triscay Stakes.

It seems such a long time ago when Faraway Town fought her way into third place behind Yankee Rose and Telperion in the Group 1 ATC Sires' Produce Stakes.

There were also placings in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes, Group III Spring Stakes and Group III Kembla Grange Classic as well as numerous fourth-placed finishes.

The daughter of Not A Single Doubt had just one win on the board when she snapped a two-year drought at her most recent start at Randwick over 1200m.

With Tim Clark back in the saddle, Faraway Town overcame a wide trip to cling to a half-head advantage over the fast-finishing Zestful (Redoute's Choice) with a half-length back to Raiment (Street Cry) in third. (photo Steve Hart).

Trainer Matthew Smith said they had changed things up at training and keep her to shorter trips and the mare had responded positively.

"We are just trying to keep her as happy as we can and keep her short," he said.

"The last part of the race they were coming at her for sure, and she has had four weeks between runs.

"We ended up in a bit of an awkward spot but she was good enough to win."

A $200,000 purchase by Mystery Downs out of the Bell River Thoroughbreds draft at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Faraway Town advances her record to 3 wins, 2 seconds 4 thirds from 19 starts with earnings of $832,325.

She is the second foal of the unraced Dehere mare London Calling who is a sister to Listed Stakes winner Lisson Grove and a half-sister to Group 1 Flight Stakes winner Only a Lady (Sir Tristram)and the Listed stakes-winner Smoko (Snitzel).

Sold to Heritage Bloodstock for $470,000 at the 2016 Easter Broodmare Sale, London Calling has a yearling coly by Brazen Beau which was knocked down to Greg Hickman at the Magic Millions for $85,000 and was covered by Written Tycoon last spring.

Faraway Town became the 50th stakes winner for Not a Single Doubt.
