Bargain Priced Justify Filly Wins Listed Mode Stakes- Half-Brother MM 2025

Tara Madgwick - Sunday December 1

Edmonds Racing look to have found the bargain of a lifetime when they plucked out a yearling filly by Justify (USA) from the 2023 Inglis Digital March (early) Sale for just $8,000 and she won her first stakes race at Doomben on Saturday.

Trained by Toby Edmonds & Stephen McLean and ridden by Kyle Wilson-Taylor, Spicy Martini was stepping up from an easy debut win back in October at Eagle Farm and made light of the heavy track to make it two wins in as many starts when taking out the $160,000 Listed BRC Mode Stakes (1200m).

Spicy Martini won by nearly two lengths and has now won $114,000 with the promise of more to come.

Toby Edmonds was thrilled with the win of Spicy Martini and quick to reveal how the bargain filly came to his attention.

“We used to have her older half-sister by I Am Invincible, who we paid quite a bit of money for, but she never lived up to what we thought she would and then my partner Holly saw this filly online and we were interested,” said Toby Edmonds.

“Apparently she couldn’t go through a sale because of her x-rays and we bought her for $8,000. There was nothing dramatically wrong with the x-rays , she was just immature.

“She’s got a lot of upside and is still quite fine, so she will mature and grow and will be a much better four year-old. She’ll run 1400m in time and I think the Tatts Tiara (G1, next year) will be a lovely race for her.”

Spicy Martini was purchased online as a yearling for just $8,000, click to see her page.

Bred at Coolmore, Spicy Martini is the first stakes-winner among four winners from stakes-placed Redoute’s Choice mare Extra Olives, a grand-daughter of Champion Filly Alinghi, a four time Group I winner.

Coolmore sold a weanling colt by Home Affairs from Extra Olives at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale  for $260,000 to Fernrigg Farm and they will re-offer the colt at Magic Millions 2025 as Lot 382.

Extra Olives has foaled again this spring producing another filly by Home Affairs.

Spicy Martini is the 38th stakes-winner for Justify, who is covering a good number of mares to Southern Hemisphere time at Coolmore’s US farm Ashford Stud.
