Magic Millions 2YO Classic Starts Heating Up

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday December 10

The race to the $3million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 11 is about to get serious with the release of the order of entry and the field and barrier draw for Wednesday's $200,000 Wyong MM 2YO (1100m) featuring a field of 11.

Racing Queensland have issued the first order of entry with the Lindsay Park trained Written Tycoon colt Tycoon Star topping  the list following his debut win in the Group III VRC Maribyrnong Plate followed by a well beaten fourth in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes.

The Tony Gollan trained I Am Invincible filly Hi Barbie scored a debut victory in the Listed BRC Phelan Ready Stakes on a heavy 10 track in a field of six, so will need to be seen in better company and on top of the ground, while Icarian Dream (Blue Point (IRE) and The Playwright (Written By) fought out the finish of what looked a strong race on paper at Rosehill on November 30.

A spate of recent trials in Sydney have bristled with promising MM eligible youngsters and several will line up at Wyong on Thursday.

A $375,000 Magic Millions purchase from Newgate Farm, Tempestuous is the race favourite.

Tempestuous (Extreme Choice), Memo (Capitalist) and O’Ole (Ole Kirk) have all been stakes-placed earlier in the spring and the race also includes Snitzel colts Blitzburg and Offenbach, who ran the quinella on debut in a 900m maiden at Newcastle last month.

First season sire Anders has two runners that have both won out of  town trials and interesting runner for the Bjorn baker stable in All Too Hard filly Horseshoe Hill, who won a recent Sydney trial in good style.

Whatever happens on Thursday the order of entry will get a good shakeup although this race has been run since 2006 and the only horses to have won it and gone on to win at the Gold Coast are Karuta Queen, Unencumbered and Capitalist, while Golden Slipper winner Farnan did win in 2019, but failed at the Gold Coast before bouncing back.
