Bowness Stud Mare Investment Rewarded with $650,000 Too Darn Hot Colt

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday January 7

At the 2023 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale Bowness Stud bid $70,000 to secure a young well related mare by American Pharoah (USA) in foal to Too Darn Hot (GB) in her first season and the resulting colt from that mating provided a huge windfall when selling for $650,000 on Tuesday at the Gold Coast.

Too Darn Hot (GB) colt from Asteroidea sold for $650,000.

Consigned as Lot 177, the colt is the first foal of Asteroidea, a winning grand-daughter of Group I winner Stella Cadente, who traces back to  blue hen Eau D’Etoile with this branch of the family producing a new Group I star this season in Kiwi mare Grail Seeker.

Grail Seeker made it back to back Group I wins last weekend when winning the WRC Telegraph Stakes and there are likely to be more G1 wins in store from this star on the rise.

The Champion Australian First Season Sire in 2023/2024 and in front on the Second Season Sire list this year, Too Darn Hot did not shuttle to Darley Australia this spring so his progeny are in keen demand with this colt snapped up by the stallion syndicate of China Horse Club/Newgate Bloodstock/ Kia Ora.

“He’s a very good stallion, Too Darn Hot. We love that colt. He’s very sharp out of a fast Australian family. There’s a lot of Dubawi about that fellow and he's a great mover as well," said Henry field of Newgate Farm..

“Bowness breed a good, tough horse. They work hard and they are great people. We thought he was a really spectacular colt and we thought he was one of our picks in the sale.

“We thought he was a special horse and hopefully he can gallop.”

Bowness Stud's James Daly was over the moon after selling the most expensive yearling Bowness have ever produced and spoke with Maree McEwan.

The second foal for Asteroidea is a colt by Best of Bordeaux and she was covered by Zousain last spring.
