Written By Puts Begg in Winner’s Circle Again

Tara Madgwick - Sunday February 23

Grahame Begg is understandably a fan of the progeny of Widden Stud’s Written By, who he trained to win the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes in 2018, and it was one of the stallion’s daughters that had the trainer in the winner’s circle for the first race at Caulfield on Saturday.

Lightly raced mare Samangu has been a work in progress, but made it four wins from six starts when she led and skipped clear to win the 1100m mares race by half a length.

She had one run as a two year-old before a lengthy break and the four year-old has put together a tidy record since returning to race last October and has now earned over $200,000 in prizemoney.

Begg is in no rush to step her up in grade too quickly, but clearly believes Samangu has more to offer.

A $200,000 Inglis Classic purchase from Willow Park Stud for Rohan J Hughes Thoroughbred Services / Grahame Begg Racing, Samangu was a successful pinhook having been purchased originally for $42,000 from the Davali Thoroughbreds draft at the Inglis Weanling Sale.

Bred by Bylong Park, Samangu is the first winner for Estelle, an unraced full sister to Group I winning mare Driefontein, who is now at stud in Japan.

Written By has had plenty of winners  since the start of the year including his brilliant two year-old filly The Playwright, who won the Group III ATC Widden Stakes and was a brave fourth in the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes on Saturday.
