One to Watch – Newcastle

Tara Madgwick - Thursday March 22
Snitzel is the sleeping giant on the Australian 2YO Sires List and with three runners in the Golden Slipper could shoot straight to the top of the list, but one of his nicer colts that did not quite make the Slipper field was a winner at Newcastle on Thursday.

Bondi as a yearlingThe Peter and Paul Snowden trained Bondi was second to Performer in the Listed ATC Breeders Plate and sixth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic to Sunlight before resuming from a break to finish third to Encryption in the Group II Canberra Black Opal Stakes.

Winless until today, he remedied that anomaly with a stylish three-quarter length win in the open 1300 metre maiden as favourite and connections will no doubt be seeking Black Type with the talented colt in coming weeks.

A $400,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Strawberry Hill draft for China Horse Club/Newgate TS/Winstar, the colt is the third winner for Bondi Blonde, a Red Ransom (USA) sibling to Group winners Danroad and Strawberry Boy as well as stakes-winners Newtown Jet and Tippitaka.

Strawberry Hill sold the full brother to Bondi at Magic Millions this year to Sun Bloodstock for $350,000.
