Spicy Martini Back with a Stakes Win

Tara Madgwick - Saturday April 26

Edmonds Racing look to have found the bargain of a lifetime when they plucked out a yearling filly by Justify (USA) from the 2023 Inglis Digital March (early) Sale for just $8,000 and she returned from spell at Eagle Farm on Saturday to score a stylish win in the Listed BRC Mick Dittman Plate (1000m).

Trained by Toby Edmonds & Stephen McLean and ridden by Kyle Wilson-Taylor, Spicy Martini looked good winning a recent barrier trial having gone for a spell after finishing sixth in the $3million Magic Millions Sunlight Classic behind Private Harry and Lady of Camelot.

Spicy Martini travelled deep, but was strong to the line winning by half a length over the favourite Zoubaby taking her overall record to three wins from four starts with prizemoney topping $340,000.

“We bought her online for $8,000,” explained Toby Edmonds

“She was a very cheap filly by Justify, so it was a great buy and we bought her off the back of a nice mare we had that I paid a lot of money for, that went good, but never really got to a level that it should have.

“Many of the same owners went into this filly so it is a good story.

“She's a real good filly. She's quite underdone yet and still got a little bit of a wiry coat and everything, and she's still got a long way to go.”

Spicy Martini was bought as a yearling online for just $8,000.

The Group I Tatts Tiara at the end of the carnival is the long range plan for a filly that has already covered herself in glory as a two time stakes-winner.

Bred at Coolmore, Spicy Martini is the first stakes-winner among four winners from stakes-placed Redoute’s Choice mare Extra Olives, a grand-daughter of Champion Filly Alinghi, a four time Group I winner.

Coolmore sold a weanling colt by Home Affairs from Extra Olives at the 2024 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale  for $260,000 and Extra Olives produced another filly last spring by Home Affairs before going to St Mark’s Basilica (Fr).

While Justify is not returning to Coolmore Australia, his champion son City of Troy (USA) will be highly anticipated in the Hunter Valley this spring with the Epsom Derby winner priced at $49,500.
