One to Watch – Kembla

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday May 6

Group I ATC Champagne Stakes winner Nepotism is not the only talented two year-old winner by Brutal this season that was bred and sold by Gilgai Farm.

Trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, Brutal gelding Costabit was not expected to trouble his older stablemate Elegant Artist, who went to the post as a short priced favourite for the 1500m maiden at Kembla on Tuesday.

Costabit was the only two year-old in the field and found the heavy conditions to his liking as he bolted clear to win by five lengths at his third start.

Purchased by his trainers for a modest $40,000 from Gilgai Farm at Magic Millions, Costabit is the fourth winner from five foals to race from Group I NZ 1000 Guineas winner Costa Viva.

Costabit was a $40,000 MM purchase from Gilgai Farm.

Gilgai Farm sold a Hanseatic colt from Costa Viva at Inglis Premier this year for $110,000 A Chow and she has a filly to follow by Toronado (IRE) and is now in foal to Ole Kirk.

Brutal is one of a stellar group of second crop sires (whose oldest progeny are three year-olds) that have produced Australian G1 winners and is in the same company as Too Darn Hot (GB), Alabama Express, Tassort, Super Seth and Castelvecchio.

He is priced to please at Newgate this spring at a fee of $16,500.
