Vinery Sell Pair of Million Dollar Mares

Tara Madgwick - Thursday May 8

Vinery Stud made their mark at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale selling two fabulous mares off the track in Mumbai Muse and Makarena, who fetched $1.8million and $1.5million.

A Group III winning half-sister by Zoustar to Aussie bred Japanese stakes-winner Jazz Etude, Mumbai Muse was trained by Michael Freedman and raced by Woppitt Bloodstock and partners that included Kia Ora Stud, who elected to buy out the other owners.

Mumbai Muse was originally a $525,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Michael Freedman Racing / Julian Blaxland Bloodstock from the Coolmore draft, but has a strong connection to Kia Ora Stud as they bred and sold her mother Mumbai Rock.

Mumbai Rock went through the 2013 Inglis Easter Sale where she was bought by James Bester for $1.55million, so it’s no surprise she can produce a good type with Mumbai Muse sure to get every opportunity at Kia Ora Stud.

“We loved her. Loved her since she was a yearling,” said Kia Ora Stud’s Shane Wright.

“We bid on her as a yearling and were lucky enough to be in the racing partnership with her and coming here, you know, we always wanted to own her at the end of it and we were pushed very, very hard, but I think that's just indicative of the market here tonight.

“She's had a great racing career so far, but this is the end. She's off to the breeding barn.

“She's a very obvious candidate for Farnana and she'd suit very well, but I think when you look at how I Am Invincible and Snitzel are, you know, it'd be lovely to send her there once or twice as well.

“Farnan’s going to be around for a long, long time and only going to get better. So, you know, she might go out for the first year or two.”

Flashy chestnut Snitzel mare Makarena has proven a massive winner for the Hawkes family selling for $1.5million to Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock.

A Group II winner of $1.4million, she was purchased by Hawkes Racing from the Arrowfield draft at Inglis Easter for $250,000 and runs for the family in partnership with the Lechte family.

Makarena is a half-sister to Group III winner Missile Mantra, who had an I Am Invincible filly sell for $1.2million at Inglis Easter this year.
