New Classic Prospect and New Aussie 2YO Winner for Wootton Bassett

Tara Madgwick - Sunday June 1

The Group III JRA Derby Trial (2000m) at Baden Baden in Germany overnight produced a new stakes-winner for Wootton Bassett (GB) with lightly raced colt Juwelier staking a claim for classic success.

Having just his fourth race start, the Alessandro and Giuseppe Botti trained colt was strong all the way to the line scoring a head win for Adrie de Vries.

Bred by Newtown Anner Stud, Juwelier has changed hands several times.

He was purchased for €140,000 by Hana Jurankova at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale last May from Bushypark Stables, who had bought him as a yearling for 82,000gns at Tattersalls October Book 2 Yearling Sale the year before.

He was then sold to his current owner Hajro Jusufovic after winning a maiden in good style in France last month.

He is a half-brother to stakes-winner Curvature from well related Galileo mare Gravitee, a full sister to Group I winner Intello and grand-daughter of Group I winner Occupandiste.

Juwelier is the 64th stakes-winner for Wootton Bassett and is his eighth from a daughter of Galileo.

Wootton Bassett will be back at Coolmore Australia this spring and added a ninth local first crop winner to his tally on Saturday when the Ciaron Maher trained filly Wiltshire Square (2f Wootton Bassett x Sausedge, by Shamus Award) saluted at Werribee in a 1000m maiden beating older horses.

Stakes-placed three times previously she was overdue for a win and will no doubt take confidence from the outing going forward.
