Godolphin Reshuffle – Who Will Train Custom?

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday July 16

Godolphin will not be short of trainers looking to take over the preparation of promising filly Custom, who comes from the family of another of their stable stars in Zardozi and opened her account with a facile victory at Randwick on Wednesday.

The break up and realignment of the Australian racing arm of the Godolphin empire was on full display during today’s Inglis Digital sale where 25 horses sold for $2.2million, but at Randwick they produced a filly that looks like she has a lot more offer.

A two year-old daughter of Street Boss (US), Custom had four starts earlier this year in good company for two third placings, but lacked the strength to capitalize on her talent.

Resuming from a spell in the 1100m maiden, the James Cummings trained filly scored the softest of wins under Zac Lloyd. She cantered up and passed the leader Beside the Ocean going on to win by more than a length eased down.

Stable representative Darren Beadman revealed the race did not go to plan, but Custom was still too good.

“Well done to Zac Lloyd, he made the executive decision there as we intended to ride her on speed and be in the box seat, but when she stepped away slow, he was able to balance her up and get her into a rhythm,” said Beadman.

“When she went through her gears she showed that little bit of class she showed last time in, but back then she didn’t have the strength to finish it off like she did today.”

Beadman would not be drawn on who would be training the filly next season indicating she could go to anyone of about 10 trainers that are in the mix.

Custom is the fourth winner from four to race from blue-blood Dubawi mare Wedding Veil (IRE), a three-quarter sister-in blood to exciting two year-old Dubawi colt Saba Desert, who won the Group II Newmarket Superlative Stakes for Godolphin in the UK last week. Read about him here.

Wedding Veil is an unraced daughter of dual Group I winner Gossamer, who is also the fourth dam of Group I VRC Oaks winner Zardozi.

Wedding Veil has a yearling filly by Victor Ludorum (GB) that has already been named Flower Crown and produced a filly last spring by Anamoe before visiting Cylinder.

Street Boss is on the Darley roster for Victoria this spring at a fee of $66,000.
