Juvenile Trial Watch – Randwick

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday July 22

Plenty of action at the Randwick trials on Tuesday morning with nine heats won by juveniles and they included a stakes-winning filly and another talented colt and filly with stakes aspirations, plus an unraced colt from a family that was featured in one of our most read stories of last week.

Also in action against the big gun older horses were Beiwacht and Wodeton and you can catch their trial here in our Spring Stars story. These racetrack rivals are soon to become stablemates!

Good looking Zousain filly Bellazaine had a great prep in the autumn beating Beiwacht to win the Listed ATC Lonhro Plate before missing narrowly in the Group II ATC Sweet Embrace Stakes to Within the Law.

She then ran in all three legs of the Sydney 2YO Triple Crown – Golden Slipper, Sires and Champagne Stakes – and was the only 2YO this year to do so.

She did not place in any of those races, but the fact the Waterhouse Bott stable sent her around in them speaks volumes for her ability and toughness.

She had her first trial back in a 740m scamper and showed her natural class and speed to win by a couple of lengths.

Doesn’t need to have improved much to figure in the nice fillies races, although pedigree would suggest sprint trips the optimum for her.

Interestingly there are two other exciting fillies to watch from this same female family this spring in My Gladiola (I Am Invincible), who won the G3 Blue Diamond Preview, and the talented maiden Autumn Blonde (The Autumn Sun), so if you have a piece of this family it’s about to get shaken and stirred!

Also given a spring wake up call in a 740m heat was the Michael Freedman trained Wootton Bassett (GB) colt Pallaton, who looked big and strong in scoring a soft three-quarter length win.

Pallaton won on debut last December by a big margin, then was a disappointing fourth in the Pierro Plate won by Shaggy and followed with a change in tactics to share the lead in a hotly run Group II ATC Todman Stakes. The leaders all dropped out in that race with Tentyris coming from last to win, so it was probably a forgive run.

I’m happy to give Pallaton another chance this spring… stronger, wiser and does have ability.

Another filly with a proven track record is Artistic Venture from the John O’Shea and Tom Charlton stable and she won her 1045m heat at her second trial back and will be well and truly ready to go first up.

The daughter of Trapeze Artist had four runs in her initial campaign, all of them in stakes races and was never worse than fifth with her best result a third to Rivellino in the Inglis Millennium. Connections will be looking to shed the maiden tag and hopefully jag some more Black Type for a well bred filly, whose grand-dam Serious Speed won the Group I MRC Thousand Guineas in 2007.

Unraced I Am Invincible colt Cisco failed to flatter in this first two trials, but the Annabel and Rob Archibald trained colt was fitted with blinkers for this 1045 m heat and did his best work so far to win by half a length.

A homebred for Rosemont Stud, Cisco is the third foal of Group III winner Khulaasa, whose first two foals are winners and the second of them, Fitzalan, was the subject of this story last week about the investment Rosemont Stud have made in this progressive female family, click to read.

Additional winners were: Tyreek (Snitzel), Frostfire (Zoustar), Defiance (Zoustar), Barbarossa (Too Darn Hot (GB), Iniesta (Farnan).
