Handy Victory For Wootton Bassett’s Wise Inlaw

Dane Squance - Tuesday August 12

Making just his third trip to the races and improving off his last start fourth, 3yo Wootton Bassett gelding Wise Inlaw produced the goods at Bairnsdale on Tuesday, winning with plenty in hand over 1200m.

With just under half the field withdrawn on race morning, 11 faced the starter with the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman trained Wise Inlaw jumping away the short-priced favourite against the older horses.

Away well from barrier five, apprentice jockey Emily Pozman went forward aboard the gelding to settle in second, allowing the Jason Evans trained Night Beauty to take up the running.

When the home turn was reached and the leader started to weaken, Pozman came to the outside of the tiring leader, and with very little persuasion Wise Inlaw responded impressively.

Pulling away with ease to score by two and a three-quarter lengths, a margin that could have easily been more, Wise Inlaw looks to be a horse to follow.

The second runner and winner out of the Group 3 VRC Frances Tressady Stakes and Group 3 MRC Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes-winning Snitzel mare Sylvia’s Mother, Wise Inlaw was a $300,000 Magic Millions yearling sale purchase by Mitchell Bloodstock from the draft of Berkeley Park Stud.

Sylvia’s Mother has an unraced Too Darn Hot 2yo colt name Dr Hook in the care of Hawkes Racing who has been retained to race by his breeders Mrs P L Crosby and Mr R R Crosby, while the mare produce a filly by Home Affairs last season and is due to foal to Darley’s Champion Anamoe.

Raced by Mr K S Chung and Mr M W Chung, Wise Inlaw in the first local winner this season for Coolmore Stud’s Wootton Basset, who will stand at a fee of $385,000 (inc. GST).
