Hellbent Mare Cracks $3million with G3 Cockram Victory

Tara Madgwick - Saturday August 30

When Grahame Begg has talented mare Magic Time ready to fire first up she rarely misses and the six year-old daughter of Hellbent produced her A game at Caulfield on Saturday to win the Group III MRC Cockram Stakes (1200m) as favourite.

The dual Group I winner showed her class when carrying 59kg to a three-quarter length win with Mick Dee in the saddle.

Magic Time will have a myriad of options going forward given she has won in both Sydney and Melbourne and wet ground holds no fears for her.

"There are options in Sydney as well, so we'll work it out," Begg said.

"She might be outweighed in the Rupert Clarke. She was a 112-rater going into today's race, so we'll have to work that out in the next few weeks, but there's now hurry to run her.

"This mare still has a good deal of improvement to come.

"Her coat is still nowhere near right yet. She's still holding on to a good deal of her winter coat.

"That will come in the next few weeks, but the stimulation of a race day will bring her on greatly."

Magic Time is a $3million earner! - image Grant Courtney

Magic Time was bred and raced originally by John and Trish Muir's Milburn Creek Thoroughbred Stud after failing to make her $150,000 reserve at the 2021 Magic Millions. Purchased privately last year by Yulong, she has the overall record of eight wins and five placings from 21 starts with earnings topping $3million.

Magic Time is the best of three winners from three foals to race from Group III winning Nicconi mare Time Awaits and is a half-sister to Group I placed Henlein and smart metro winner Cosmonova.

Time Awaits has a yearling colt by I Am Invincible and is due to foal to Snitzel.

Magic Time is the highest stake earner for Yarraman Park’s Hellbent, who stands at a fee of $38,500 this spring.
