Corumbene Stud Mourn Loss of Treasured Mare

Tara Madgwick - Thursday September 4

Corumbene Stud took to Instagram earlier today to announce the passing of their much loved broodmare Bahia, the dam of Golden Slipper winner Overreach.

Bahia - rest in peace old girl.

“It was a sad day at Corumbene as we laid to rest our beautiful mare Bahia. What a mare she was! She was the dam of our resident stallion Standout, our Golden Slipper winner Overreach and the stallion Outreach.

“She lived her retirement years here looking after our younger horses and her final days were spent in a lovely lush paddock with her paddock bestie.”

Bahia had just turned 23 and is a filly I remember well from the Gai Waterhouse stable back in time as she was a filly with tremendous ability that went to stud with no Black Type.

By Snippets from Miss Prospect, she was bought for Corumbene Stud at the Magic Millions in 2024 by Vin Cox Bloodstock for $250,000.

She was the seventh foal of stakes-winning Rory’s Jester mare Miss Prospect, whose first foal had been the stakes-winner Consular, but even better was to come for Miss Prospect as time went on with her ninth and final foal being the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes winner Reward for Effort.

In between her two stakes-winning offspring came Bahia, who had four starts and won them all before breaking down before she had a chance to be tested in Black Type company.

Retired to stud in 2007, Bahia slipped in her first year at stud, but after that it was smooth sailing for the next few years and her second foal was Overreach.

Retained to race, the daughter of Exceed and Excel was sent to Gai Waterhouse and duly won the Golden Slipper and is making her own mark at stud as the dam of Group II winner Lofty Strike, who stands at Swettenham Stud with his first foals arriving this spring.

Lofty Strike is a grand-son of Bahia.

Interestingly the baldy face of Bahia was passed to her grand-son and is now appearing on many of those foals! Read about them here.

Later in her stud career she produced the Group II winning sprinter Standout, who stands at Corumbene Stud and her produce record ended at six winners from seven foals to race with another of her notable offspring the Group placed stallion Outreach.
