Obucci Breaks Through For Hanseatic At Sandown

Dane Squance - Wednesday September 24

With a last start second behind Frankel filly Chateau Eze who went on to record a Listed second at her next start in the Jim Maloney Stakes, the Phillip Stokes trained Hanseatic filly Obucci was sent out at double figure odds at Sandown on Wednesday, breaking her maiden by three parts of a length.

With Greg Eurell’s 3yo Churchill gelding Fastobullet going forward from barrier 2 to take the lead, the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr trained Falstaffian (Snitzel) came across the field from barrier 11 to settle in second position on debut, while Obucci was getting a very good run under Lachlan Neindorf in fourth.

As the field tun into the home straight and Fastobullet was still under a hold, Neindorf presented Obucci down the outside while the leader’s stablemate Miss Revealing (Swear) was getting along the rail.

Continuing to make ground, Obucci powered to the line, holding a three-quarter length winning margin from Miss Revealing with Fastobullet holding on for third.

Getting home well from the tail of the field was the Tony and Calvin McEvoy trained Sunlit Serenade to finish two lengths from the leader with the daughter of The Autumn Sun looking ready to win.

Having recently made the move to Melbourne from Adelaide, jockey Lachlan Neindorf was very thankful for all the opportunities he’s been given.

“It's fantastic," said Neindorf. "Obviously, it's well known me and Phil had great association with the stable back in Adelaide, and to be able to get the opportunity first and foremost, but to be able to continue that relationship over here is an absolute privilege.”

Coming to the races confident of a forward showing by the filly due to her improvement, Neindorf felt it was a a huge pat on the back to the entire team back at the stable.

“Look, I remember when I rode her at first start over in Adelaide and we sort of got thrown in the deep end a little bit, and she probably wasn't ready for that,”

“But to her credit, she's gone to the paddock, she's come back and Phil does a magnificent job with them at Pakenham and all the team in that regard to get the pony on some of these hotter horses, and she's one that's adapted to it really well, and she's relaxed.

“We've just really been trying to drill into her mannerism just to sort of come back and travel nice and kindly underneath her, and it's proven today and she’s won the race.

“But even last start, she relaxed so well that I was confident going up and trip today that she'd be able to do the same.”

Passed in shy of her $100,000 reserve when consigned through the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft at the Magic Millions Adelaide yearling sale, the Mr P Cameron-bred Obucci is the third winner from three to the races out of the winning Bel Esprit mare Vivacity, herself a half-sister to the stakes placed O’Malley (Street Boss).

From the family of stakes-winning juvenile filly Kinky Boom (Spirit of Boom), Vivacity has an unnamed 2yo colt by Saxon Warrior (Jpn), a yearling filly by Kermadec (NZ) and is due to foal this season to Newgate Farm’s Wild Ruler.
