DIY Pedigrees for Melbourne Cup – Take the Tip!

Tara Madgwick - Monday November 3

If you are having trouble settling on your Melbourne Cup horses a look at pedigree might be a help, so take a flick through our five generation pedigrees for all Cup runners and we’re giving you a clue as to what to look for!

Once upon a time a horse with Sir Tristram (IRE) or his champion son Zabeel in the pedigree was always something to take as a positive, but in the modern era with so many imported horses you need to look a little wider.

Click here to see five generation pedigrees for all Melbourne Cup runners.

Teofilo (IRE)

In recent times a couple of sires have really made their mark on the Cup siring multiple winners and they are Irish bred stallion Teofilo (Galileo) and champion German sire Monsun.

Monsun (Ger)

Since 2013, these two stallions have produced six winners of the Melbourne Cup-

Monsun – Fiorente, Protectionist and Almandin

Teofilo – Cross Counter, Twilight Payment and Without a Fight

We’ve gone looking for the runners this year that have either Teofilo or Monsun in their pedigree, also Zabeel.

Flatten the Curve – from a daughter of Teofilo

Half Yours – by a son of Teofilo

Furthur – his sire Waldtgeist is from a daughter of Monsun

River of Stars – her grand-dam is by Monsun

Torranzino – his sire Tarzino is from a mare by Zabeel
