Pedigree Watch – 3YOs for Autumn

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday November 18

We know about the three year-olds that found G1 success this spring, but there were a couple that came to the party late and hold G1 promise for the autumn, so who are they?

Sheza Alibi has untapped potential - image Grant Courtney

A six length winner of the Group II MRC Sandown Guineas (1600m)  last Saturday, Sheza Alibi finished her juvenile season with a second to Autumn Boy in Queensland and started it with a second to Tentyris in Melbourne, read about her here.

Sheza Alibi is easily the best we have seen so far in Australia by blueblood Deep Impact sire Saxon Warrior (Jpn), who shuttled to Coolmore for four seasons and Sheza Alibi comes from his third Aussie crop conceived at a fee of $13,750.

Think about that for a second, Saxon Warrior won the Group I Newmarket 2000 Guineas and is by Japanese legend Deep Impact from Group I winning Galileo mare Maybe and the family has produced countless G1 winners including Epsom Derby winner Dr Devious and Epsom Oaks winner Dancing Rain…. That is an awful of pedigree for a fee of $13,750!

She is the 19th SW for Saxon Warrior and is the first as a broodmare sire for well bred Flying Spur stallion Shaft, who spent most of his stud career covering small books of mares at a fee of $3,300.

The dam of Sheza Alibi, Sheza Gypsy won six modest races and her dam Gypsy Mai was stakes-placed and produced seven winners including Listed Canberra Guineas winner Rom Baro. It’s a winning family with G2 ATC Reisling Stakes winner Glistening the star, but far from an exciting one, however the addition of Saxon Warrior might have led to the best horse this family has produced.

Panova wins the G3 Carbine Club - image Grant Courtney

The Group III VRC Carbine Stud Stakes (1600m) has been used as a launching pad to greatness for Chris Waller trained fillies Fangirl and Aeliana with this year’s winner Panova a filly on the up, read about her here.

Panova is the seventh stakes-winner for Trapeze Artist, whose fee this spring has been set at $33,000 down from a starting point of $88,000, which tells you the trajectory of this son of Snitzel, who was the Champion 3YO of his generation.

He has already sired a G1 winner in Griff and come the autumn Panova could easily be another.

Panova is the first foal of three time winner Love Me Quietly, a daughter of talented Group winning Tale of the Cat (USA) stallion Trusting. She is his second stakes-winner as a broodmare sire and interestingly the other SW is G3 Launceston Cup winner Distrustful Award, who is by another son of Snitzel in Shamus Award.

Third and fourth dams Niagara Falls and Bracken Bank were both Group winners and further back the family has produced a couple of Aussie legends in Golden Slipper winning champion sire Marscay and much loved Melbourne Cup winner Subzero, so Panova lacks for nothing on pedigree.

Napoleonic is a good looking rooster - image Bradley Photos

The Group III MVRC Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) was won in dazzling fashion by gorgeous looking colt Napoleonic, who has gone for a spell off a career best win, read about him here.

The shock passing of his sire Wootton Bassett (GB) has put a premium value on his colts with the potential to continue his legacy and the right form in the autumn could easily catapult this guy to the top of that list.

His first three dams are by champion sires Fastnet Rock, Last Tycoon (IRE) and Vain tracing back to influential import Gypsy Moss (IRE), who has spawned an impressive dynasty of stakes-winners.

Most members of this female family have no trouble running a mile, so Napoleonic might have plenty of options as the autumn unfolds.
